Modifying a Lava drive with different pot

I am interested in modifying a lavadrive so that the current can be adjusted on the fly. I would like to remove the current trim pot off the drive and attach either a slide or thumb wheel resistor in its place. Before this can be done, I need to know the model of the current trim pot on the lavadrive so I can find something with an identical range. Does anyone know the range or model of the current pot on the lavadrives?

I'd just break out the ohmmeter, especially since he might have changed the pot he uses for the different versions of it. Beware that sometimes those pots short or open as they're adjusted, so make sure the one you replace it with maintains a constant connection.

The latest 'Round 3' drivers use a 2.2k pot. You should be able to replace it with any pot of the same value and get good results.

The 'Round 2' V2 Micro FlexDrives used a 6.8k pot.

I am completely illiterate when it comes to electronics, so please keep that in mind when evaluating the stupidity of my question!  lol  does that mean there is less adjustment range in the Round 3 drivers?    :-?

Ted

EDIT: To prove my point..... Saturday i got all the parts, and made my first "dummy load" Was so proud of myself....but it didnt work. Turns out i soldered everything in parallel instead of in series. :'(

Nope, it's just different. There's actually more upper range in the V3, and now it only goes down to 91mA instead of 65 mA, to better match recent blu-ray diode requirements.

oh ok.  In the low range, does it still only go to 110mA?

Ted

in the low range it goes to 151mA now, and high range starts at 175mA and goes to 500mA (700mA in the right conditions) now.

So 152mA-174mA is no longer available?

That's gonna alter some of my builds :(

Peace,
dave

That's right.  I can send some V2 if you prefer, about 25 of them came with the others, so that will give you the 152-174mA range.

This is the reasoning.. for the recent crop of blu rays, up to 151mA is already overdriving them a lot, higher and it's extremely overdriving them. For the 6x, 152-174mA is a good range, but no one builds with 6x anymore, not even the supposed '6x' sleds being sold in the GB are truly 6x. They are lower in power than the $300 6x burners we used to buy.

That said, I could modify drivers for you to give you this range once the V2 runs out. It's just a matter of stacking a resistor on top of another one.

SWEET! That works for me. I'm not going to continue building much after the next month anyway.

Peace,
dave

thanks dr. lava.
you'll be getting an order for some drivers for me soon! Glad to see they are back in stock.
