Temperature, power, wavelength, alignment, bonding between the crystals if its a hybrid, etc. Changes in any of those can CAUSE of mode hop. In terms of the physics behind one, you're gunna get into some pretty hairy math. The general idea (and as best as I understand it) is that a beam of energy at one end of the crystal, when it traverses the length of the crystal twice and ends back up at its place of origin, must have the same profile of energy on its cross section. There are only certain profiles that will match that function, TEM00 being the lowest order. Various factors within the cavity can force that resonance to occur at higher order modes/profiles though, and then you end up with your crappy looking TEM01 or worse!

was curious coz i know someone local who bought an ebayser for $150, a supposedly 100mw 532. u could see it was clearly mode hopping when using a lens kept changing from 1-3 beams.
 
it is entirely possible that you may not get an rma from them as they have kinda tightend down on the products they return. Since this is only mode hopping through an additional lens but is otherwise normal then I wouldn't count on it.
 
They said on the e-mail they sent that this was indeed mode-hopping and it would need to be replaced.

I also have another question, it says that you must return it within 7 days or the ra number will expire and you have to get a new one, does this mean it has to arive to them within 7 days or i just have to get it shipped out within 7 days. Because they said the shipping will take 5 to 10 days and i sent it out yesterday.

well i hope its just sent out before the 7th day becaus i dont kno what mine is on.... sent it canada priroity 6-12 days and well i shipd it out on 12-11-07 and today its 1-3-08 so..... hu cant waite till it gets their becaus i didnt get insurance on it and would be mad if it didnt make it
 
I got the exact same shipping, i wish they woulda let me got shipping for like 3 more dollors tho..

man i love this company its awsom. i am shure i am going to love my new laser : ) wow what a great company it is, and wooo lasers as you see i am shure you wont be dissapointed by how they treat you becaus i am shure they will set it right .... though i wonder what was causing my laser to do the things it did. strange that not even nova count figure it out : | just my luck though but anways yyaya going to get my laser in a few days :P

It means just what they said...you must return it within 7 days.... ;D It does not mean they must receive it within 7 days. :P
 
I was thinking that but it was kinda confusing on what they meant exactly, man this is going to take forever, at least i have another green laser to keep me occupied.

I understand it is frustrating but I am sure they will make it up to you. I am anxious to know what they will send you and also f22warzone. I never did check mine for mode hopping until you reported the problem with yours and posted the pics. Fortunately mine does have a prefect round dot.
 
I first checked mine because i saw the dot seemed like it was changing in brightness and flashing which was because the 2 seperate dots it was making.

I didnt really know actualy if it was until i figured out the lense trick, i was burning some wood with a lense i got from them and when i shined it at a wall i saw the big spot and the various degrees of mode-hopping.

(on a sidenote im selling all my old gamecube and gameboy advnace games so i can make another diy red, lets hope this one doesnt join the other 4 in the led graveyard, to bad the stuff wouldnt get here in time so i have to live for a whole 2 weeks without a laser to burn stuff :'()

i cant waite to see what they got me either : ) they did say it was a few points highter ..... wonder what they mean by few : ) ..... on the other note great awsom company to work with respond quickly and i cant waite for my new laser..... my dx200 is beging to mode hop when its room temp and after 60 seconds of on with out heat sink ( pushing this baby to its breaking point and it just keeps asking for more lol i bet it will die soon but its doing great : ) )
 
Okay this is AWSOME, shipping was so slow to get there but now they said it was indeed mode-hopping and they would ship me a laser withhhh.... 91mw of power!!, mine originaly was 71mw average this is like 20 more, awsome.

a 91mw can light matches unaided right?

Glad to hear it. Yes it should be able to light a safety match with no trouble. Remember my graph? It might take a few seconds to warm up before it reaches its peak. Let us know when you receive it.
