Military grade laser?

Depending on who makes the .50 in question, their are plenty of scope option, but an IR laser should be stable, you can fit m.i.l.e.s lasers on a M2 can you not? Green is out of the qustion though, well with out getting a hardened soild state laser.

I myself use a 445 for target practice though, not like anyone is down range. gives an ar-15 a nice hip fire quick reaction spot, after 300 meters though the spot to big and and very dim in the day.

wanted to add if its a .50 you aiming it at me the last thing im worried about is going blind :wtf:

LMAO!:crackup::crackup::crackup:

As others have already pointed out though... a highly visible laser to show your exact location... seems like asking for trouble.

Unless of course it's strictly for display purposes :D

yep i do agree with that but if your running around hip firing an AR than they gonna see you anyway, for sniping only time I would ever use a laser is if I had an IR laser and nvgs, but a FLIR scope is what I would realy like, gonna make one some day, cooling the sensors is the biggest pain imho.

any way I would not be using a .50 anyway, they kick up so much dust you can see it for a mile.

338 lapua is a better choice for a hunting or sniping round unless your shooting at a car at over a mile.

Anway I can say a well build laser host and normal laser diode could take the kick from a .50 but a dpss green would not work. In a full size solid state you can but I would not be the one to ask about how to mount all the optics to be ok with monster kick.

Actually one of the requirements for my "ideal" laser is durability, and I would be quite happy with something that can take a 5 foot drop to pavement... don't really see myself needing more than that.

Unfortunately only laser I'm willing to test that with is a 1mW red which I have dropped once from a hotel balcony (~50ft) by accident... still working.

A flir scope is very cool imo :eg: good luck with it.

Sorry for asking this, but ..... am i the only one that think that, mounting a lasersight device on a (basically) long-distance sniping rifle, is maybe a bit of countersense ?

I mean, something like a .50 cal barrett, isn't usually intended for hidden sniping ? ..... lasersights, same as trackers, works in both the directions ..... maybe is just a personal feeling, but i feel very strange, to mount on a hidden sniping rifle a bright beam that say to anyone you point at "hello, i'm here" ..... ;)

Right, this may be .50 bmg but it won't be a sniper. Long story short it's a custom build, bull-pup fashion, 18" barrel, highly efficient muzzle break, and hydraulic recoil reducing system. This makes the round manageable in a rifle most people would associate with an M4 or M16, although it will be quite different. Thanks for all the good info in here, DIY is probably the direction I'll end up going. I need something with real daytime visibilitiy so 5mw just won't cut it.

445nm is probably the best option. At least you'll get a very clear dot. At night you will have an impressive beam though.

Good luck with it. Post some pictures once you build it:D

Er.. a tactical .50? Not that I don't think that's cool.. but heh.. Why? If you have a target that's armored enough to require that... My guess is that you probably don't want to be very close to them either...

@anselm Yup all out of bubblegum, it must be @55 kickin' time.

I have to agree with HIMNL9, seems like a bad idea to give the other interested party a tracer back to the source of the shot.

i really doubt that he is a sniper lol

It's gotta be some kind of a display/demo model for show not for use.

I mean I'm nowhere near being an expert, especially on .50 rifles... but even with my limited experience it seems there is really nothing that beats a good optical scope for actual field use.

Powerful laser beam would add a bit to the intimidation factor, but in terms of practicality seems pointless.

Anyway, is it really allowed at the US Army to configure your Weapon just the way you like it ? If i would do that at the Swiss Army they would send me immediately to Jail. But befor they would send me to a psychiatrist to check if i'm insane.

Otherwise, this is fact.

when you take into account gravity, wind, resistances you need to aim above where you want to hit. so wouldnt it be the same for a laser aswell?

or is that just for smaller rifles?

No, this is right for any rifle ..... different parameters gives you different parabolic decay curves, but any rifle have a decay curve that start at the barrel exit, no matter how long the curve is.

(ok, ok, except gyrojet, but only til the bullet don't end the propellent, then also this one decay :p :D)
