so, back on topic now....

I bet the glass module (hell use the spring too) from an older style thermostat (for home heating / AC) would be cool.

It's a sealed glass vial mounted on a spring, filled with mercury.

easy to find, cheap and already sealed.

Just hook up a coil, attach a magnetic bar and presto!

I have 8 of those. Will try. There really isnt much hg in there though.

well your only shining a 2mm beam of light on it, so quivering it should make a cool effect.

Okay, so the switch did contain too little hg to have any interesting effect, so i just took a video of the laser reflecting off the jar. The beam is a little bit distorted because of the thick glass.

This was done on the projector for one of the first laser shows, LOVELIGHT after one of the scan heads, the beam reflected into a mercury pool, that was mounted on a galvo shaker.
