What does the Flexdrive even rely on? Is it a DC-DC converter? Linear? A mosfet current sink?

Its got some gate drive "schmarts" too, before he moved to the left coast, he was a neighbor. That BGA is there for a reason...

It can easily handle what the OP wants, but the data sheet is derated by design, the mark of a good engineer.
