the other night i was messing around with my p3 flexmod.
i had it turned up to 1.07 amps to test out another diode.
i reattached my lpc but forgot to turn down the output.
i realized what i had done the second i turned the power on
and turned it off as soon as i could. i figured i led'd the die but somehow its still
working. can anyone explain this?

try the diode at its recommended current. thats the best i can say.

defocus the dot and see if you see any strange patterns in the center of the beam that weren't there before. You may have gotten lucky, or your diode may have only slightly degraded.

Or may it be a freak diode... Anyways your are lucky to not end up with a COD.
Indeed surprising...

Makes me think of the mysteriuous diode HMike, me and others tested, that actually went dimmer with too much current, and revived when returning to normal current... still haven't figured out how that works though.

one diode that I extracted from a DVD burner acted the same way. with higher current he get dimmer (<1mw) and with normal current he get stronger (300mw)
IF I remember well it was from a LG gsa-h5n or something like that...

:) cheers that the diode won't got burnt

Checked the defocused dot and nothing appeared damaged. it still looks to be as bright as before.
as for benm's statement about the higher the current the dimmer the die got i believe i read it has to do with the many reflective facets on the diode and how they align themselves when pumped with current.
