LPC-815 LOC Harvesting Problems

Hey Guys, I am having an issue trying to get this little bugger out of its heatsink. I have seen Moh's tut on it but there seems to be a new heatsink design preventing me from getting it out.

Heres a picture.

The pic is kinda a blurry but it looks like the same heatsink they've been in. I just harvested one about 3 weeks ago and it looks the same. :thinking:
 
I have tried tweaking it but the metal just dends off where the needle noes are. I have filed down to less RIGHT to the diode. :/
 
I trashed these things many a time, until dieselmarine let me know how he did it and it worked pretty well.
You still have to take your time but grab both sides with good needle nose..face the diode face down and grab as close to the diode as possible, try to go up the needle nose a bit to the fatter part of the shaft ...now twist in opposite directions slowly back and forth.
I had my doubts when he first told me, but was surprised...not filling, no cutting just a firm grasp and slow twisting. worked the first time I tried.

I followed Moh's vid where he files a notch on both sides of the heatsink the holds it with a pair of pliers. Then bracing a flat-head screwdriver against the pliers just plies off half of the heatsink. Is this the vid you saw?

I've used this method with the PHR because the heatsink is softer and will bend and break. I didn't have any luck with this method in the LPC because the heatsink is harder.

Looks like the same heatsink I extracted an LPC from 2 weeks ago. I used a cheap triangular shaped metal file I picked up at harbor freight. Just make sure you point the diode in the same direction as in the video to keep the filings out of it. When filing I went with long, even strokes in a single direction (down) which kept 99% of the filings away from the diode. Every 4 or 5 strokes I'd stop to see how close to the can I was. Shining a flashlight on it helped. Just be careful when you try to pop the heatsink open. I must have filed almost all the way through because it flew apart with hardly any pressure and I think the ole ticker missed a beat as I watched the diode fall out and land in the (thankfully empty) bolt holes of my vice.
 
I've used the two-pliers method on these very succesfully too. Just get 2 big pliers, hold on to either end of the heatsink and give it a few twists in opossite directions, and the diode just drops out.

Alternatively you can clamp one side in a vise and then use pliers to twist the other side, same effect.

There really is no need to file/cut any part of the heatsink with these diodes. I'm not particularly strong, and able to use the twiting motion with limited effort.
 
These diodes were a pain in the ass for me, I did the two pliers method and also the vise and pliers method, Moh's video is the best way to do it you just have to take your time.
 
i filed both sides and then used the vice instead of pliers to break the hs.... worked fine.
 
Its odd so many people seem to have troule with these. I've found the heatsinks on them pertty brittle and prone to metal fatigue in a few twists.
 
Lesson for the day.
Keep trying different things until you find something that works for you.

I almost took a photo of the multiple Mauled heatsinks I have from this sled...diodes may still work but I doubt it, being open can and all. Lucky these things are pretty cheap.
 
I dont know about luck here... i've extracted and handful of diodes from these sleds and havent had a problem doing so so far. I prefer the LOC heatsink to the stuff used in LCCs really - that is more malleable and less prone to simply break away.
 
Edit to my post:
The heatsink's on my lpc's were soft and smooshy. Like trying to make a crisp break off a soggy turd. I got them out but the diode casing was Fuxored. Pressing them into a module was a little more effort than usual with the chunked edges
 
I use to harvest thee the same way i harvested the others, except i would also file down the front as well where it's closed off.

You just have to be careful cause the diode is almost touching the front. So as soon as you go through it, your gonna start filinging on the diode itself.
 
That, and the problem of metal dust making its way into the diode. I'd rather use side cutters than a file to make a break in the heatsink if required.
