couldnt find anything with search, so im just gonna ask, how do you harvest a long open can diode, because i dont want to damage the exposed part.

Very carefully. Deffinately use a grounding wrist strap. When you get the diode off of the slep with the heatsink still on it, use a jewelers saw or something similar to cut about 3/4 of the way through one side carefully not to cause too much vibration or friction heat. Then you can take 2 pairs of pliers and twist and pull out on the 2 halves of the heatsink and it should just pop in half with the diode in one half. Then just carefully take it out of that and you're done. Like I said though make sure to use a grounding wrist strap because the loc diodes are easily damaged by ESD.

i used to use the saw method but ive grown fond of the twisting method since i found out about it. take 2 pair of pliers on each side of the heatsink and twist slightly both ways until the diode falls out. if you can tell the heatsink was twisted then you twisted too much..

could i use nippers or wire cutters? because i dont have a jewelers saw, and what all can i connect the wristband too? is any piece of metal good enough?

no, you need to connect it to ground, either earth ground (the floor) or a synthetic ground like the bottom circular hole in the wall outlet.

i take it back, sometimes the floor works, but i would go with the synthetic one in the wall outlets. and remember, the bottom circular hole, not the slits.

i guess ill do the pliers method

Good decision.

Rememer to twist gently, back-and-forth. You are simply trying to "loosen" the diode so that it falls out. You are NOT trying to twist the heat sink off.

Peace,
dave
