Looking for advice on choosing a laser

This may sound silly, but just roll with it. I have enjoyed making toast and pancakes with pictures drawn in it (my 3 yo daughter loves it). I've been using a pencil torch but it's like trying to write with calligraphy with a rattle can. I've been pondering getting a laser pointer to do some more detailed work.

I'm looking for a laser that can lightly burn bread/light-toast and at an entry-level price for someone who's last laser purchase was a 5mW green pointer about 5 years ago.

Be aware that anything that burns is going to require safety glasses. To play with around a 3 year old is not a good and safe thing. High powered lasers that burn can be very dangerous. Please read up on Laser safety before you go down this road. Welcome to the forum and be safe.

Perhaps it should be said that my daughter is not going to be using it....nor has she been using the pencil torch. . I make the breakfast, she just eats it and helps clean up. I have no problem with eye protection.

A lot depends on your price range, take a look at Sanwu or JetLasers. Both are good quality and will do want your asking. But remember burning with a laser is like a welding torch, anyone watching needs safety glasses. Eyes don't grow back, so be careful and enjoy.

Some kind of DIY CNC engraver in closed box to make it safe? There even exist some quite cheap solutions for engraving wood. Might work on toast as well.

Edit: As Bob mentioned if you use laser out of enclosed safety box, it is dangerous. Proper eye safety glasses for that particular laser have to be used. No welding glasses, sun glasses etc. may replace it. Just to make it clear.
