It's only the slow blade.... That worries me..

I see, you never read Dune science books ..... otherwise you will know that ANY interaction between a laser beam and a Holtzmann shield, will result in an instantaneous subatomic reaction, that convert in a nuclear explosion with randomly unpredictable strenght (usually from 0.1 to 10 Kilotons, but sometimes there are megatons explosions ..... probably it depend from how much of the defender matter is converted in energy, before the shield collapse .....) .....

Interestingly enough I too have had several ideas for a lightsaber design including the whole mirror at the tip with a laser thing. I think I have pretty much settled on the best way to do it and have it be like an actual lightsaber is by manipulating plasma to do what you want and it should also allow for an adjustable output. ALready the military has plasma cutters that in principle can be increased to a larger scale but the power needed to make it work and have a blade of around a meter would be quite large. However I like the ideas on here, I might have to look into working on that some more again.

The plasma cutters I have seen have basically been compressed air heated by an electric spark. It works great for cutting steel, and apparently meat too, but it is not a lightsabre.

In "Alien 2" there is a nifty little handheld welding/cutting tool, it also looks to be within the possible. As long as you accept a limited runtime.
