Just got my Class CP permit and i can drive now, but i was wondering how old do i have to be to obtain the real license and be able to drive around friends and stuff and be able to drive without someone over 21 ?
Whats that new Joshua law about ?

Do you live in the US? If so, then 18 is the magic age when you can drive with no restrictions (in most states, anyway). It does somewhat depend on what state you live in.

Yeah i live in the US. And i thought it was younger then that ?

You can get your license at 16, possibly 15. It's 6 months after you get your license before you can drive with people in the car, but they don't really care and you're not likely to get pulled over. Also some places around here there's curfews. Minors can't drive after a certain time. This may not apply to everywhere though.

Yeah, when i got my license, i started off with a permit which was basically drive with a parent to get like 40 hours or something then after that you take a road test after 6 months and you get your license. But that was like 4 years ago when i was 16. Not sure if it has changed.

From what I remember, they give you a book about this stuff.... have you looked in there? This kind of thing varies greatly by state and changes frequently. Or, go to the website for your Bureau/Dept. of Motor Vehicles, I'm sure you can get that info on there as well.

This varies hugely from state to state, in Illinois you can only drive one non-family member for the first year with your license, then you can drive with as many as you want. Ask your driver's ed teacher about the laws.

It all depends on the state you live in. I know when I got my license it was 17 to drive in New York but recently I believe it may have been raised to 18. Search your state and DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle) in google and it will lead you to your state's laws and regulations about licenses and such.

Yeah It's similar to what silver said, but 1 year younger on everything.

Yeah i live in SC, do you take your tests when you get your permit or when you get your license their silver?

I had to take a written test for the permit (very easy you can pass without studying at all) and for the actual license itself, a driven road test. Thats NYC rules at least idk if it varies outside of the city.

Heh, I was thinking of a driver for lasers :p.

In California the rule was in my time that you had to take a class first get a learner's permit and have 6 months on it. Besides that you had to do 9 hours I think with a "driving insturctior" who would tell you how to drive and their car would be set with an extra set of brakes on the passenger side.

I believe once you finished that part you could get the learner's permit. 6 months later you take the written test, if you pass that you take the driving part. Now be careful on that, I was tricked and failed the first time. Tiny little sign said no left turns I didn't see it and failed because of a minor error. Being nervous will do that.

That was 10 years ago, not sure if the rules have changed by then.
