Hello everyone!

I'm Jeff from Dallas, TX.

My first experience with a laser was in high school (1978) and it was a HeNe Spectra -Physics low power, very expensive type. As I recall we lit a cigarette with a match so that we could make smoke to see the beam. Wow- fascinating!
Fast forward to mid 1980's and I'm at the DFW electronics swap meet. Yes the good old days when it was on the east side of downtown at Ross ave. Someone had a bunch of Pioneer laser disc players for sale and I bought one. I got it home and took out the laser assembly powered it up, hooked the galvos up to my stereo and made squiggly lines on the wall. None of my friends were impressed, but I knew there was a light show or something I could do with this laser. Well work, life, etc took over and I put the laser in a box and into storage. I still have that laser and a few others that I've acquired (salvaged) throughout the years. I like to go to surplus sales and university auctions. I recently bought a CO2 laser that was used for heart surgery. I had seen a few posts where people had repurposed cosmetic lasers for other uses. I didn't have a lot of info on the heart laser before I bought it but I was hoping it had an off the shelf laser and power supply inside. Well I got it to my garage and it booted right up and in test mode it worked as expected. The log book that came with it showed less than a dozen surgeries and the computer interface showed approx 150 pulses. Wow what a deal-it had hardly been used! I wanted to make this into a laser cutter/cnc router/3d printer but when I got inside it was all custom designed. I was looking for something that was mass produced and would have had a lot of information available that I could remove and use for my own purpose. Well needless to say this hardare is way beyond my abilities to figure out. I would like to sell this machine and reinvest in a stock laser cutter. If anyone is interested in more info about this laser message me.

Hey Jeff - welcome from Houston. See you at the next TEXLEM (laser geeks gathering)

Did you try hacking the embedded controller (unlikely to work but worth a shot)? In the worst case scenario, you could always remove the CO2 tube and hack the existing power supply to power it up but make sure you do some reading beforehand

Unless its very very cheap, I can't imagine anybody buying a non-plug n' play CO2 laser since they can be had for a couple hundred bucks second hand (at 40W) from the right online places

Welcome to the LPF, Jeff. Good luck on your sale. Enjoy your stay and stay safe.

From what I understand glass C02 laser tubes lose helium over time which leads to failure, also the coating on the electrodes can over time give off molecules that cloud the tubes mirrors, I understand it's worse with the cheap Chinese tubes, I expect a medical laser would have a good quality tube or I wonder if they could use a non-glass gain medium enclosure ?
Can you post some pics with the cover off so we can see what's there ? See if you can find the date of manufacture, there should be an info tag on the back and/or under the cover.
