"Laserism" (Laser Persecution) Thread

So the deal is simple, I do shows 4-5 days a week (generally with our small 6ft racks which include 6pcs SHINP SL5's, 4pcs SHINP CL26's, 2pcs custom VGB's, and assorted intelligent lights) and occasionally with our full arsenal (20ft truss loaded w/mayhem) - Last night I was playing a smaller club we've been at for just over 4 years 1X a week, and was asked to scale back the lasers and discontinue the use of the hazer entirely!

As I stood looking at the Club owner in disbelief, I realized that I get a lot of negative reaction regarding the lasers (generally disregarded) and the lightshow in general, mainly things like "it distracts from the singers" (in a Karaoke environ) and "it keeps people from dancing, they're too busy watching the show" (In a DJ environ) - anyone else encounter this?

Anyone who has faced adversity due to their passion for Photons, please speak up!

My mom hates them as hell,
My brother wants to punch me everytime I fire them in the same room as him (of course he doesn't do it cuz I have a laser in my hand :D)
And he always says he got it in the eyes, even if it was 3 meters from him.

I am PISSED!
 
@BuildAbluraylaser if your brother/mom doesn't like your lasers the least you could do is not use them in the same room. If the laser in question is over 5mW then you are being a dick. If not, it is more of a courtesy thing, like turning down the music if someone asked.

@BrewCity your shows sound awesome mate.

How could I explain this to you...
I'm messing around with my pointer in my room, then someone comes in and starts complaining about that. I'm not trying to be anoying with them, but yet I hate that she wont stop telling me that they are dangerous, even if shs doesn't even know what is a laser.

Ah okay. Well obviously if it's only your room we're talking about your brother should just stay out if it bothers him. And as for your mom, she lets you keep them right? So what if she says they're dangerous (anyway, she's right!)

Anyway it's really none of my business.

Anyway BCM, it really surprises me that you have had those reactions! Surely people should only be happy that not all focus is on them when they fail miserably at singing karaoke, and I have always experienced lasershows and haze as encouraging even more people to dance because it creates a "magic" world where people feel more like letting go and dancing even if they are usually shy.

Maybe the DJs are jealous because people are having fun but not solely because of their music mixes? I know some cool DJs but A LOT of the rest of them are totally self obsessed and would probably react similarly. I think light shows, especially laser shows, improve any club greatly to the customers so I don't see the problem.

In fact, most of my friends have been begging me for updates on my laser scanner because they really want that and my smoke machine for all parties as it has the power to amaze and create a dance-environment throughout an entire room.

The only bad reactions I have had from anyone were:
1) Being afraid that, because the beam is visible, it would cut their body parts off like in some bad movie.
2) Girls being upset because they could have spent that money I bought a silly thing to put a dot on a wall with on shoes instead.. cause if you don't have a new pair of shoes for every day you are surely going to die!
 
Either they impress people or cause fear. The mention that have I a laser that has relative range of 50 miles will impress ANY person. Clubs what can you expect? People are there for other reasons. Awe is the reaction I usually get. I know how to spin it, but I don't tell everyone. If it gets real bad the last resort is to say that a blu-ray can used like a CSI tool. Every detail and flaw as well as well as how dirty a place is can be seen with yellow glasses.

Your first point would fit quite well in the "laser mythology" thread! Funny thing most people don't know that it's of course the invisible beams you have to watch out for with regards to doing damage to body parts other than the eyes. Or, perhaps some people are like I used to be - believing the only lasers in existence are visible lasers !


Your second point makes me think of my mom's typical reaction to my lasers - money better spent elsewhere, like on clothes and shoes, as far as she's concerned. Of course, I really don't think she cares what I spend my money on, but she just can't see the point of lasers, period. That's one class of reactions - people who just don't "get" lasers and don't see any point in collecting and using them for the fun of it.

Actually I am writing a list of everything that bothers me. I've been doing it for more than 2 years... When I reach 200 pages I'm gonna publish it (I'm already at 15%).

Mostly because people don't know sh*t about lasers (or technology if we generalize) and are scared of things they do not know. So yes, I do know how you feel, happens to me every single day and it sucks.

Yes, in general people are afraid of what they don't understand.

My mother used to be scared of my lasers and think they were a waste of money.. that was until I mentioned that her 30th pair of shoes were also redundant - and then I got a smoke machine and she saw just how beautiful the beams are. She also loves my kaleidoscopic 30mW DX and has even borrowed it and shown it to her friends (after I spent 20 minutes lecturing her about safety).

Also, I tend to tell people who ask "What can you even use that for?" that, if they ask that question, they won't understand the answers. Sure I could begin talking about laser scanners and how beautiful the different wavelengths of lasers are as well as the hundreds of scientific and practical purposes they can be used for.. but then I could talk forever, and I would probably have lost them at "lasers can be used in beam shows".
