GooeyGus knows how long I have been trying to get my grubby little paws on one of these.  I was always outbid.  I finally won one.  It arrived today.

It is a 1mW, 632.8nm, battery powered (2@9V), Helium/Neon LASER POINTER     ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The beam is not coming out to the side.  The laser is turned to the side

I moved the camera.  The dot is very nice.  However, you can see the color

;D ;D ;D

That tattoo is probably older than you. I don't have a good picture of it. Maybe after class ;)

That is not the trade watch. That is my everyday watch. I need to get a battery for the new one

Peace,
dave

*Gulps* How much did this 1 mW pointer cost you? I'm afraid for the answer to be honest.

Didn't Uniphase also make one of these? I think that I remember seeing one at Edmund Scientific when I was a kid. It was probably over $1,000 back then. Bill

That's a very cool HeNe Dave! I'm going to have to keep my eyes on ebay for one.

Those that have been around for awhile know that I have a fair collection of "lecture type" pointers. This is one I have lusted after for quite some time.

Peace,
dave

While that is a great find, I'm curious about the divergence. I used to have a huge box filled with 1mW Siemens tubes, but the divergence was horrible on all of them.. especially for a HeNe.. I'm guessing 1.5 mrad, but maybe even worse. How is it with that pointer?

I can remember seeing an old-school HeNe laser pointer once that had a battery pack that you wore on your belt with a cable leading to the pointer itself.. That's probably even older technology than that pointer..

Divergence on most gas lasers is large.  Gas lasers are mostly used being shined almost directly into some sort of optics or detector.  Divergence isn't much of an issue in practical application.  I haven't measured this, but it is acceptable for a lecture hall application.

I have seen pictures of the "battery pack" HeNe "pointers", but have not been successful in finding one

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** I couldn't find one showing the battery pack

wow that is a huge pointer daguin :D the next gadget on your list?

did you ever use that enormous 1mw laser you bought (quite a long time ago) as a lecture pointer? ;D

*Warning rhetorical question* Are you going to use this one for a lecture? We need/demand a video showing the students reaction! ;)

There is one offered in eBay every once in awhile by the same person.  It looks looks my big 1mW pointer.

It is also from the Draper Blinds Co.  It has a HeNe warning sticker.  Unfortunately, the guy who owns it says it isn't producing light.  Most importantly, he wants $500 for it!!
Five hundred dollars for a broken HeNe is a bit too high a price for me ;)

I have used my big <1mW pointer in lecture.  It is a BIG hit.  I arrive at class a bit late carrying the case.  I very ceremoniously set the case on the lectern and open it up.  I pull it out in such a way that it is the center of attention.  I pull out my laser goggles and put them on.  I hold the laser with both hands and hold it away from my body like I am concerned it might hurt me.  Then I "test" it.

Yes.  My students think I'm crazy. . . . . . . but the classes are full and my retention is high ;)

I will use this one in lecture as well.

Peace,
dave

Haha, I can imagine the scene. 8-)

Man I wish you were one of my professors, that would be amazing, though I suppose the class wouldn't learn much besides gas lasers and what dpss means. ;D

Yeah. As I said, I can only use it when it doesn't matter if the class becomes sidetracked :(

Peace,
dave
