Laser printer parts....

anyone know anything about the lasers and optics in a laser printer. i have a dell color laser printer, and took it apart (it needed a new fuser, roller kit, and control board).

From what I can tell, the laser in a printer is not very strong. But I could not really find any actual info on the laser... It probably has some nice optics in there though.

yes it is a hexagon shaped motor head with mirrors on each side. also some nice FS mirrors. the motor will make a nice liquid sky... it looks very similar to this:

I took an HP apart that had a 2 sided mirror so they vary a lot....I have a photocopier in the garage that is due for dismantling very soon, I am hoping for some useful optics

I got a hexagonal one and some lenses from a dead laser printer. Also some first surface mirrors and some lenses. From a photocopier I got several first surface glass mirrors 1" x 9". The hexagonal mirror works fine for a liquid sky effect.

Has anyone successfully used one of these printer boards for a liquid sky? I was wondering how you powered it.

I pulled this one out of a Xerox last night, and I hope someone has already figured out how to get it to spin!

follow those little trace lines on the RIGHT side of the motor and see if you cant find the larger GROUND trace, ground it to a 3volt battery. then barely touch the positive to the other traces neer the motor and when it catches power it will spin for a second, or move slightly. this is how i utilize those STUPID spindle motors from DVD drives that have a cuircut board atached to them like the one above. the motors are surface mounted or something, because you have to guess and check the traces, theres no wires anywhere.

I removed the hex mirror from it's mount and mounted it on a different spindle that I turned on the lathe. It gave me 5 lines on the wall no matter how i pointed the laser at it so I shelfed it.

The hex mirror is probably slightly off axis, wobbling. It has to be 100% level or else it will make a bunch of lines.

Those motors if not step-motors are propably 3-phases or worse (like 4 phases), it need very difficult driver to control.

Three-phase motors aren't so tough to control. They're a little more complex than a 2-phase motor, and mastering their control opens up a lot of opportunities to control CDROM spindle motors (which laser hobbiests have plenty to spare), which are very nice brushless 3-phase motors, perfect for spirographs or whatever.

As for the motor above, see what the specification of the chip on that board is. It might do all the 3-phase control from a simpler interface on the connector, saving you the hassle.

Just found this site just by chance. I pulled out the following out of my dead Samsung ML-1740 laser printer. I want to know what this part would be called and if possible where can I get more of them? Or something similar like posted above. I have a project that Im working on and these pieces would be a perfect fit for what Im doing. Thanks
