Laser Output power and safety

I just looked at the feebay listing. Hmmm, says it runs for an hour on a single 16340 Li-ion. That kind of implies an input to the pump diode of around 750mA. Even with a pretty crappy crystal set I'd expect a good 100mW of green plus FSM knows how much IR.

If this is really pushed Ebay will just ban the sale of all lasers.

They will not, as they would have already done it. Ebay and Paypal sill wouldn´t care about the power because a limitation reduces their profit.

They just limited it to laserpointers because there was some pressure from all the countries where stronger lasers are not allowed or whished to be imported.

So is it possible that the label that they said was 'accidentally put on' saying <200mw was correct and he said it was a mistake to prevent bad feedback.

That is more likely than what they told you about a mistake.
Remember <200mW means Less than 200mW and any powers
from 1mW to 199mW fall into that Label spec.

Well Jerry, I think they will remove them if someone reports such laserpointers just to officialy show they are having a clean slate. You could be of course someone who is icognito testing them. So to avoid trouble they will of course remove such listings, but as long noone notices it they will not. There is still a lot of profit to make with such sellers and buyers. But that´s just my opinion.

I'm sure eBay does not read all of the millions of listing they
have. It is up to the eBay members to help regulate items
that are prohibited.

If no-one would take the initiative then nothing would be
brought to their attention and nothing would get done.

Well I finally received the Laser...
I charged up a 16340 battery adjusted the beam
and metered it on our Newport LPM.

The verdict:-

It outputs 79mW

That's a far cry from <5mW...

How much of that is IR?

Wow 79Mw, that is a lot more than 5!

I assume both yours and would both be roughly the same.

So I guess that could be potentially dangerous...?
What kind of eye damage would occur if the 79mw overspec laser hit somebody's eye?

And I would be interested to know the answer to the question about IR too.

We just checked the IR component of this 79mW 532nm
Chinese Laser.
The 79mW drops to 61mW with an IR filter. That is 18mW
of IR.

At a filtered 61mW the Laser output is still too high to be
used safely without Laser Safety Goggles/Glasses.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Wicked Lasers on Ebay before...at least the 1W arctic. If I recall correctly, it was up there for days - I never bothered to check if it actually sold or was taken down.

EDIT: There's actually one up for auction right now. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised after reading this thread, but wow!

Yes 61mW is still too high... but I will buy an IR filter!

Any suggestions for a ND filter to reduce it down to say under 25mW?
