Laser 301 DPSS mod?

i have one of those "Laser 301" green laser, like this one:

except the part where the diode is (4) doesnt have a metal ring around it


it used to be able to burn dark plastic, but now its not able to do that anymore

i thought, maybe i could modify it in someway so it could output more power?


then i found this:
remove the DPSS crystal, which will cause the laser to no longer appear green, but be very powerful. (850mW vs 5mW) If you remove the crystal, you will be able to burn wood/clothes relatively easily.

its a IR laser, and it gets green after going though the crystal


so... if the laser pointer have a crystal like that in there, it means the diode is always a IR one?

There. Modded burning laser. I promise it will be 100 time more effective, and at least 10 times safer.

Joking aside, IR is not something to mess around with, as you can do instant damage to your eyes, and you literally will not even see it. Nor will you feel pain. Just loss of vision.

If you want to have a burning laser, consider building one, in the visible spectrum... it will be a fun experience.
 
i understand the dangers of IR and UV, those edges of the light spectrum can easily burn stuff

but how exactly IR can blind? i guess its from actual "burn" of the retina, while visible light can be both from burn and or a oversaturation of the retinal pigment (Flash blindness), like a burst of light on a flashing strobe, you get blind for a few seconds if you look at it, but then it comes back, it doesnt burn but it does blind, a weaker defocused green laser have a similar effect (and is even used in military for that purpose), but does IR does that as well? humans doesn't have IR photoreceptors... i would guess a safe way to test would be with a IR flashlight (LEDs), i would guess the camera would go blind... anyone with experience with IR, tell me more about it

by the way, i can't buy stuff from Amazon, i'm from Brazil and their shipping cost is crazy, i can however buy stuff from DX, wich i usually do thoughout the year

what would you suggest for a visible, burning laser under R$200 (R$200 ≈ US$60)?, and i can modify it if necessary. i think the red ones are stronger right? its closer to IR, so it makes sense.

IR can blind by literally burning your retina, and as we don't have the ability to see IR or pain receptors on our retinas the damage may not even be immediately obvious.

(We also don't have say "stick" receptors, but if you poke your eye with a stick that will leave you blind :p)

A 405/445nm laser would be best for burning, and you may be able to find 405 for around $60.

Shorter wavelengths are absorbed better by most materials.

i have seem projects that use a module like that before:

are those just a place to put the laser and the lens? would it be better to combine those 2 items or just use the first one alone?

also, that Laser 301 i have, was able to burn black plastic at the beginning, i even wrote my name on plastic with it, but now it just cannot do that anymore, does the laser diode have a lifetime of being powerfull enough to burn stuff lower than the lifetime for brightness? because that would make sense, it is still as bright as it was before, just cannot burn anything anymore...

i also have a UV laser pointer (2xAAA) wich with the help of a dvd lens, was able to slowly burn black plastic as well, maybe i should post some photos of those lasers?

The green module will produce anywhere between 50 and 150mW, at best, depending on luck.

The red will be fine just as part of a low power laser pointer.

Those would likely both burn. I would suggest finding out how much it would be to have things shipped from a more reputable company, in the long run, it pays to spend a bit more on a better quality laser, or better yet to build one.

Companies that are good; Jetlasers, Skylasers (laserb2b), Sanwu. You may also want to check out the BST section here on the forum. There is usually someone always selling something.

If customs is an issue (I don't know Brazil laws) you may need to have lasers shipped in legal, non functional parts.

I dont think so, but sometimes they write 5mw because they are not allowed to sell anything stronger...

in Brazil there are no laws on lasers, i know in australia there is a 1mw limit, and in US a 5mw limit

the problem here are taxes, which can be as high as 60% the value of the product + shipping... and tgen it takes months to arrive, usually packages arrive in thr country within a week, and then take at least 2 months to arrive on my home, or they call me to go get the package...

i could get those 2 items you linked, but will try new websites you suggested

He's not saying that 5mW will burn - he's saying that "5mW" will burn - I.E. that "5mW" Red is likely doing at least 50mW and is only advertised as 5mW. :)
 
5mW Will never burn, but those lasers tend to use the same cheap diodes and drivers and generally put out at least ~50mW or so, sometimes a bit more.

You either need to buy from a reputable source, or build yourself, if you want to be sure of what you're getting.

To light a match, strictly in my experience (as others have been able to manage it with less) it takes ~100mW. Less for 405/445nm, and more for 532/650nm.

Many large commercial websites also simply do not allow any laser pointers over 5mW, so on ebay for example, you won't see a single laser over 5mW, but if it's a 445nm, and it works, there is no way it's outputting under ~500mW-1W.
 
As others have mentioned, taking the crystal out WILL increase your lasers output and burning capability but it is NOT recommended unless you're aware of the risks and take the appropriate precautions. This power doesn't come from nowhere though, it was always there. Your power drop could be related to more than one thing. That is the consequences of buying a cheap laser of unknown quality. 9 times out of 10 the laser is already being pushed really hard and this often causes degradation over time and sometimes these lasers will stop working after a few weeks, days, hours ect.

Taking out the crystal does one thing. It allows the IR light (Which is usually several 100mw's) to pass through the optics with minimal losses. You lose a lot of power just from the DPSS conversion and more/less depending on the optics and coatings used. IR laser light is ONLY dangerous because it is invisible and your eyes will NOT have a blink reflex to this spectrum. (Theoretically speaking 100mW of IR is the exact same as 100mW of blue, green or any other color). So please do not play with IR laser light unless you really need to or you are taking the proper precautions. Nobody here wants to be responsible for someone else losing their vision because of a dumb mistake.
