Default Re: "Laser 301" host breakdown.

Thanks for the info!

That's true!

Here the 780nm host:

And my 532nm where this joint is more tiny:

I can try to take apart the 780nm, is a scratched and ugly host to see how it works!

303/301 is a cute, cheap and interesting host!

Quote:
The green arrow points out another hidden feature. The front end of the focus knob can be removed by heating up the glue holding it on. It's a simple piece of cut sheet metal covering some kind of accessory socket. Look at the front aperture and you can tell. Is the aperture a constant diameter for its whole length (~5mm if so), or does it look like a thin piece of metal covering a hollow space? If the latter, then the front end of the knob is a separate piece. Removing it gives much easier access to the lens barrel and allows adjustments to the lens without needing to remove the focus knob.
You say this?

Don't take apart the 780nm if it still works. I'd even be willing to buy it from you if you want to get rid of it. I've never seen one in 780nm, and don't have that wavelength in my collection at all. Do you know how many mW? Scuffed-up hosts are no problem to me, as you will see in the image below.

Below is the complete teardown of the front end of my 405nm 301, minus removing the brass lens barrel because I didn't feel like dialing in the focus again. This, and an identical 405nm, were the first lasers I bought that were above 5mW. The second laser died the LED death within minutes of powerup. The one in the picture is two years old, works fine, and the only issue with it is that sometimes the focus drifts away from where I set it. It's a solid laser. The tool marks are from early disassemblies before I found that it was basically safe to heat it up and melt the glue before unscrewing it. Now I can unscrew it without tools.

I'm 100% sure that your laser is assembled as shown in the image. It's just that the joint between the front end and main host is very well concealed.

The panels show:

1) Front end assembled and installed on host.

2) Front end detaches from host body like so. Brass laser module is also visible.

3) A close-up of the front end.

4) Focusing knob removed from focus adjuster tube which is sticking out from the front end casing.

5) Top of focus adjuster tube sticking out of front end casing. Brass lens barrel is installed in adjuster tube. This is what your picture shows above, minus the lens barrel.

6) Inside of front end, showing the threads inside the casing wall, the adjuster tube, and lens. To remove the adjuster barrel rotate it to the left while looking at it just as this panel shows it.

7) Focus adjuster barrel removed from front end casing.

8) Close-up of top of adjuster barrel, showing installed brass lens barrel.

9) Close-up of bottom of adjuster barrel, showing spanner holes and lens.

Probably about 100mW+, is a CD-RW diode driven at 165mA with a boost driver (originally a 405nm laser, but my actually 405nm LD only supports 100mA of current) using a very bad plastic lens (since the light is dim, I can't see the beam defects caused by the lens).

I was planning get a low power single mode 445nm LD and put on it because it uses a boost driver that is suitable for those LD's and a quality lens for it, what you think?

Also, my first high power 532nm have a 301 like host, but with some differences, I remember that when I dropped it (what killed it) I unscrewed the part of the danger label easily, and found the crystals losen:

I have a JD-851 host waiting for a driver and a lens too.

That's some photos of my 532:

Got this lens cap out:

I used a old laser tube that fits the screw, then it comes off with it:
