ok guys

This is my first attemt at doing a DYI segment so give me a break. :P

How to build an inexpensive fan cooled heatsink for you diode.

Supplies:
A CPU heatsink and fan from a old computer.
12v wall adapter/transformer around 500mil amps.

First is to drill out heatsink with a 12mil drill bit (or 29/64th) across the heat fins. See example.

Next assemble your AIXIZ housing and insert into heatsink. Reinstall fan and wire fan to your 12v wall adapter/transformer. Then wire diode to power supply. It should be ready to turn on and burn.

Here is a video of a red diode I did about a year ago. Your diode will stay cool using this method.

nice heatsink,
but wouldn't this be too much cooling for such an diode? (ok, you couldn't have too much cooling)
i htink this is better for, i don't know, ehm, 400mw diode's?

The cooler you can keep it, the longer you can leave it on AND the longer it will live. It will never get below ambient temperature this way anyway.

Peace,
dave

it work very well :D the red in the vid was a open can and was aprox 300mw so it stayed cool. it allso worked well on my 1w/2w 808ir diodes allso

You can always buy one of those water cooled systems.. ;D

Looks like a nice drill out of the heatsink.. but the problem would there be enough contact to really justify using a heat sink style like that. You probably should get the circular version that fans out..

I tried putting a diode at -20C once, though it was dead to start with. The ice over the top woulda got in and messed up the diode lol

^Using ice to get a diode to -20C? What kind of ice is that? Even with a huge amount of salt, I'd be surprised to see water ice get that cold.

so you want water cooled heres one i built   :P

Exactly what I was thinking. At first, I thought he meant a phase change cooler of sorts.

Using a TEC, pumping 12V @ 4A into it for a while! I managed to create a big pile of ice over the top of it. I shoulda tried powering it up, just for fun ;D
