Today is Sunday, July 20, the 201st day of 2014. There are 164 days left in this year. All of the following events happened on July 20th.

Two of the greatest technological achievements of the last century:

1969 At 10:56 p.m. EDT, astronaut Neil Armstrong, speaks these words to more than a billion people listening at home: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." As he and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin stepping off the lunar module Eagle, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. A third astronaut, Michael Collins remained aboard the command module.

1976 On the seventh anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, the Viking 1 lander, an unmanned U.S. planetary probe, becomes the first spacecraft to successfully land on the surface of Mars.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few more things that happened on this day:

1954 the Geneva Accords divided Vietnam into northern and southern entities.

1999 After 38 years at the bottom of the Atlantic, astronaut Gus Grissom's Liberty Bell 7 Mercury capsule was lifted to the surface.

1944 Hitler cheats death as a bomb planted in a briefcase goes off, but fails to kill him.

1871 British Columbia entered Confederation as a Canadian province.

And many other things too numerous to list.

Your welcome, I thought it important, I heard the moon landing mentioned a couple of times but not enough. I guess it will be a big deal on the 50th anniversary 5 years from now. NASA also just released a video and photos from the "Lunar reconnaissance orbiter" Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter | NASA showing the Apollo 11 landing site, see a short video on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUcYQ7slmRw

I will try to remember to bump this thread again next year on July 20th and everyone remember to say Happy Birthday to Hmike. If by chance I am no longer around then or if I forget, then someone else please bump this thread on July 20th. Thanks.

Alan
