Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

How is the meter to be calibrated for a Blu-Ray diode at 405nm? :-?

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

as far as I know the meter will not work for 405nm that's why I won't sell my lasercheck...

Daedal,
I received my meter today and I want to thank you from the top and bottom of my heart.. :P I have not yet played with it but I did at least put the battery in it..I love the back lit display...very easy to read.. :) I will try to play with it later this evening..I am thinking about a quick way to mount the filter until I can do as Mike has. Thanks again.. :D

You're most welcome Gazoo. :D

I'm very happy to know that you got it and that it's doing just as you wanted it to be :D :D

As about the filter, I picked up a set of these magnets from DX:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4248~r.55743137

I stuck them with some 2-part epoxy on a sheet of PCB and cut it to the right size... And sharpied the whole thing. If I had thought about it a little bit I would have spray painted it to make it all black... now it looks kind of badly put together. :-?

Anyway, I used a wood bit (the flat ones) at a .5 inch size and that makes a nice level that will hold the filter in place, and then used a slightly smaller drill bit to widen the hole. Again, used some epoxy to hold the filter in place on the hole. The result is stunningly fitting :D :D

As about the meter itself, I epoxied 2 of the magnets above to the sensor side of the LPM and the holding power is perfect in that it keeps the filter nicely held and not hard to remove :D

Daedal,
My meter arrived today! :) :) Great! :) :) Excellent packing! :) :) Very stylish item! I'll be tryin' it out just as soon as I get a battery. :P :P
Many thanks! :) :)

Glad you got it vizp :D

Grab a BUNCH of batteries... this little guy is a battery killer! ;D

I will also be working on making a power source for this thing to help me with battery costs. Rechargeable 9V batteries are not much better so permanent power is the best solution ;)

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

I don't know where I saw it posted, and perhaps the OP can confirm. But as I recall the difference in measurements using an LPM-1 and another meter that was able to be set for 405nm was less than a 10% difference.

BTW, the filter is much thicker than I had anticipated...but it is now mounted to the meter.

I used 3M double sided sticky tape. I punched a hole in the tape with my vice and a plastic thingy. Then I put the tape over the hole on the meter and removed the protective film on the tape. Finally I put the filter on. I love 3M tape..lol.

This is a quick and easy way to mount the filter, but I do not think it will be the permanent solution for me. The meter is working very well, and agrees with Mikes chart for the red open can but I still need to check it with the GB diode.

It is very close to the specs Nova gave me as well. But it is interesting to notice how fast the output on my X105 drops as it begins to heat up.

Anyway it is great to have this meter and not have to be guessing. I have not hooked up the serial cable yet...

Just as TL said... This is not calibrated to BluRay (405nm) lasers. But through the testing I have noticed that the power variance across all of the units was very very slim to none! :D :D The meters read a steady 100mW laser at within 5mW (most were within 1-2mW) :D :D

With that said... once I get a BluRay together again I will be giving out a conversion rate between the Blue setting (473nm) and BluRay (405nm) since I will be comparing the reading to a thermal sensor output :) You should then be able to measure the output of a BluRay laser using the LPM-1. Perhaps with some work I can get Tony to annex it to his software to have a setting for BluRay as well ;)

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

Will some scale factor adjust meter values for 405nm, or are such values more variable? :-?

A line power supply is sure to aid heavy tester use. 8-)

If at first you fail... try again... and again... and again... and again! ;D

I rewired my first cable and retested it about 50 times to only find out that the Com port on my computer is for some reason not compatible with Vista! :-/

I ended up pulling out one of my old boxes and hooking it up to find out that the cables were just fine and my computer was being stupid!

I haven't tested the DX USB-Serial port yet, but once it does arrive I'll let you guys know :)

The factor would apply as follows (example ONLY):

You shine a BluRay laser onto the sensor when the meter is set for 473nm reading and it displays 20mW. The factor is a 0.75 (EXAMPLE ONLY). Thus, multiplying 20mW by 0.75 will give you 15mW and the actual BluRay reading ;)

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

I have one of the DX USB-serial adapters here and Vista loaded the drivers from microsoft to enable it so I'm hoping when I plug my meter in all is well ;)

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

GL TL :)

I ordered my USB port a while back and am still waiting on it :(

Let me know what you come up with (you might get the meter before I get the port... ;D)

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

Daedal,

Your plans for some kind of 405nm calib. sounds fine, or even a lot better than that! 8-)

I received a DX USB-to-Serial port converter a few days ago, though not yet using it. If yours doesn't show up as soon as you'd like, I'll send mine to you. ;)

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

Well you American boys seem to have your meters before us in the UK so I'm hoping mine will be here very soon :-?

Re: ** IT'S OFFICIAL **  Laser Power Meter GB

I'm sure it will TL ;D

They're nicely packaged and will survive any kind of rough-handling possible... ;)

Let me tell you that DDL packages an LPM like a newborn child !!!
I got mine back today packed better than I sent it to him :D
