INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!!

Here's a chance for some fun science. Compare a GB, an open can and a phaser.
Graph mA vs PO for all of them ----

Mike... I will anxiously be waiting for your post regarding that ;) ;D

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!

aww crap, got no money, that went all into the SenKat GB :(

Well, if we're talking "order in two months", then I'd be in.

350mW pulsed (push that maybe to 400 cooled?) sounds really good.

How much would shipping be to Europe?

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!

Daedal, can you please provide a spec sheet or some link to where there were called 200mW CWs? May have shown up earlier in the process, but I can't remember at the moment.

Also, what voltage were you running them at, without TEC cooling, to get 200mW?

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!

DDL, do you think this would be able to be used in a similar configuration as your DIY Laser torch with some current adjustments? Or, would you show us how to build it in a Labby? Either way, I would like one. Put me in for one.
Thanks,
Jay

I would want one to build a labby.

Phil, I have no idea about the shipping to Europe... and that's why this is still under-construction ;)

As about cooling them and pushing them to 400mW... I don't think so. I tried that and the max CW I got out of these was 323mW with one of the ones I ordered to test (unless I fudged somewhere... with so many things on my mind now with the car and stuff I really can't tell up from down! :-[). But the graph of the output shows that they continue to climb nicely until 200mW and then there is a dip at that point.

Thanx;

Pseudo, a spec sheet was not provided, unfortunately. But the test data confirms what they had told me and that the diodes are well capable of 200mW.

The voltage on these things, like most other diodes, was around 2.8V. With the SenKat GB diodes I get mostly 2.83V drop across them. With these I got a 2.88 V-drop. :)

As about the current, heatsinked, I got 196.3mW at 340mA, and 203.1mW at the same current with a TEC. That was the first test I did on these units. Understand that the graph was an average of all the tests I did ( more than 10 in all ).

These are just like all other diodes and would work perfectly in the DIY torch mod. I would try and get a nice heatsink to go around the AixiZ module though if you want to push them past 250mA and to use them for any period of time. I might end up working on making a nice batch of these heatsinks to fit the MXDL... unless something else sparks my interest (like another host for example ;).

Heatsinked, I wouldn't run these diodes for longer than a minute, and then allow sufficient time for the module to cool (depends on your setup), and I wouldn't suggest more than 20-30 seconds without a heatsink if running it at 200mW... :-? Maybe less even...

With a TEC and a TEC heatsink, these can be run indefinitely at 200mW for over 1000 hours or something like that... If you would like any assistance on how to build a labby, just open a thread in the Mods and Exps. section and I'm sure someone (including myself) would chime in with enough info to make it easy as drilling a hole, sticking the thing to a TEC and sticking the TEC to a CPU heatsink (see here... http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1192608097 ;)).

This is the latest red diode that I know of, and better yet, the most affordable at this power. 200mW of red at 658nm is not cheap! I have been quoted much more than $100 each in 1000+ quantities and shipping would have been an arm and a leg! This really is a great deal at something like this.

Thanx;

maybe but a bit expensive though

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!

Daedal, if you have time, I think the most telling thing you could do for us is a voltage vs mW graph instead of a current one. That way we can see compare since if the graphs are close, they're pretty similar diodes, just being termed differently. If these 200mW climb much faster than the SenKat ones though, then we can tell they're all they are cracked up to be.

I'm interested in this GB, but so far I haven't really seen enough evidence to prove they're worth the extra cost over SenKat's diodes.

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!

The reason I have not jumped in on this is because I believe the open can diode does as well as this one and maybe even better. I can very easily get 250mw's out of mine with a TEC and a little more than 400ma's of current. It takes 500ma's to get the phaser to put out 250mw's.

I was a little disappointed that the phasor went "poof" at 323 mw's, but really I think that was to be expected. According to Mike's graph, the Sony GB diode reached its peak at just above 200mw's, even though it is rated at 250mw's pulsed. We do know the Sony diode will put out ~150mw's with 250ma's of current, and this seems to be safe.

Having said all of this I would think the phasor diode would run very comfortably at 250mw's with a TEC. And if I did not have my open cans I would jump in on this deal. Granted it cost much more than the Sony diode did, but it will safely give 100mw's more power with proper cooling. And it doesn't need to be harvested...lol

Actually, now that I think about it, some simple current versus voltage information between the two diodes would go a long way in letting us know how they compare.

BTW, why are we calling these PHAZOR diodes? Why not just call them Bob or something?

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!

Gazoo - normally I would agree with findings, but I have solid proof positive the the Sony GB diodes are a little more hardy than some have tested. I am currently running one at powers over 260mw in a Dorcy Jr mod, and it is very steady. Super-powered Dorcy Junior, it smokes items instanty. Just throwing in my $.02. Now, the chances are good that I have a "freak" diode on my hands, (maybe ??) but I find it hard to believe that out of close to 1000 units sold, I am the only one who has gotten this kind of power out of the Sony diodes.

some random person: You can't call a laser diode "Bob."
pseudo: So now you're the boss. You're the King of Bob.
first guy: Can't we just call it "PHAZOR"?
pseudo: No one said you have to burn with Bob.
random guy again: I'm never calling it that.

Well, couldn't resist ;)

extra credit for whoever knows where this is from :)
