Hey everyone. This may sound odd coming from one of the more recent machinists on the forums... but I need a heatsink made!

This heatsink is for a very ambitious project. What makes it so special?

It needs to be made out of pure silver. Further, it needs to be a diode press-fit and be threaded for Aixiz lenses.

I expect this heatsink to cost approximately $100-$150 (it's relatively small).

PM me or post here if you think you are capable.

Further, I will be making a replica heatsink out of aluminum for this part that can be sent to the machinist to duplicate in silver once we have made the arrangements.

Thanks,

Wolfy

How small are you talking about? Where are you obtaining silver rod? Since you will have a prototype, have you considered having your heatsink cast from investment mold and then machining the fine tolerances?

Maybe talk to scopeguy20 about the options.

Yeah, that's the problem. I actually decided to go with silver-plated copper for better tolerances and for cheapness... I looked at .75" silver rod at 6" long and it was over $800 ~.~

That does sound like a more affordable option. What diode you planning on sinking with this shiny piece of bling?

Probably going to be either an H1600 blue, a new 500mW 635nm, or one of the green diodes, whichever. Going to be really exotic.

I'm drooling over the thought of a 510nm diode.

Please post whatever you end up with. I'd like to see it.

interesting & expensive concept, although silver has a Thermal Conductivity of ~429W/(m.K) and pure copper is ~401W/(m.K) not such a big difference like the gap between aluminum which is ~250W/(m.K)

Id love to see a uber polished silver heatsink tho! :pop:

wheres the solid gold wire?:crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup::crackup:

I have a small silver plate about 50mms square by 2mm thick. 2 ounces or so...lmk if you want it

Hmm... well, my heatsink is a lot bigger than that... but it seems like it's not o.O I did the math, and I have less than a cubic inch of material. I have about .137in^3, which works out to be about .75 troy oz, so I figure 1 troy oz is a good estimate for how much I may actually need (for polishing, etc.). You sure yours weighs 2 ounces? 50mm by 2mm is tiny.

.I remember measuring it and plugging the numbers in a calculator... and I'm pretty sure it came out to between 2-3ounces. I'm just estimating size by what I remember I'm not home right now, will update you with real numbers in a few hours

Alright - sounds good. Because 50mm by 2mm is only only .1cm^3, which would be about an ounce... which may be exactly as much as I need. But it doesn't sound like much -.-

OH. I thought you said 50mm^2, i.e. like 5mm x 10mm x 2mm or something. Not 50mm on a side.
