hey guys
on the 24th of july i am going to hong kong with a group of people.
i was just wondering if i can buy lasers there? are they illegal or readily available?
we are going to disneyland and the mongkok markets.
if you have any idea please let me know.
cheers

Not only are they readily available, but they can be had dirt cheap. (200mW green for $20)
I've heard of no problems with bring them back.
Another member who works for airport security stated they don't care about them.
If they question you, tell them it's a dildo!:D J/K

Being from Australia, I'd advise against this, unless you want to mail them all home in pieces in different packages

they x-ray the bags right?
so does this mean they search (open bag etc) everytime they see somethin that looks like a torch?
cheers

I've heard that's the laser capital of the world. Even yellow lasers for under 100$... You should seriously consider just taking them apart and sending them home in pieces, or you can just send them to me ;).

ok this takes me back to my other question. do they open every piece of luggage if they see something in the xray scanner that looks like a torch? whats the chance i will get them back in 1 piece? i will sell some here?
cheers

Your chances of getting them back in your luggage are probly not that great from what I've heard. Your best bet would be to disassemble them, and send them in pieces...

i cbf to send em in pieces i believe i will get a few back in my instrument case etc.
cheers

My brother is actually in Hong Kong right now on an extended mission trip. From what he says is sounds like you could do pretty much anything you want. There are lots of cafes and small food shops that would be easy, relax at work then hit the books and study hard! I am not sure if you were thinking more along the lines of a job related to school field, if that is the case then I am not sure what you would be able to do.

I wouldn't waste any money on postage, and there is always the possibility that one of the postal carriers could drop your new laser. :(
So. I would put them in your luggage. I am not sure what Aus customs dudes are looking for (probably drugs, explosives, guns, and/or weapons). Also, I'm not sure if they X-ray every bag. I'm positive they don't have any "Laser-snifing" dogs, yet. :D
They will surely be suspicious if you bring back 100x pen-shaped pointers, but really, if you only have a few "specialty flashlights" in your luggage, they probably won't care, even if they do check.
Um,... It's worth mentioning that you should probably remove all the laser warning labels as well.

Off topic, but if I was going to Hong Kong I'd be getting some cloths. You can buy a tailored replica Armani suit for under $400, and they use the same Italian material as the real Armani costing $4000. You dont need to get a suit, but it gives you an idea how much money you can save, and get some phat duds.

Laser modules aren't illegal in Australia, so you can just pull out the modules and take them home with you while keeping it legal.

thanks guys.

@tech-junkie lol i will have a look out for cheap stuff, and i will probably do ^^^^^sugestion.
cheers
