I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a switch

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

Suicideking injected a bit of common sense there, I am the kind of person who always thinks "It can be done" and I am the one to build it! I never look at cost in time and effort ::) If this is a one off, hiring has to be the way to go.

I found this site where you can hire stuff, it may give you a start.

I found it from this ebay listing.

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

the only problem with having fog is that i have gotten to the point of having too much. The laser beam was canceled out within 1 foot

SuicideKing: where can i find a good place to find pre-made dj sets like that (specifally time tunnel and liquid sky), i found a few on ebay but mostly made in China.

...Dude, EVERYTHING is made in China.

OK, first go to this site; http://www.lasershs.com/laser_effects_gallery.htm
It has a gallery of all the laser effects you can do, along with their standardized names.
Then do a Google search of that laser effects name, along with "laser" and "equipment" and you should find some nicely priced units that can do the effect you want, right out of the box. (don't pay too much attention to the laser show units the website sells as they are all pro units and very pricey.)

What you want, is more like this or a couple of levels above, certainly not a thousand dollar pro unit.

Even budget priced machines can do effects like this:
Red is cheap, with Green and Blue,  being more expensive.

Hope this helps, but you can PM me if you need some specifics. -SK

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

why not just just a filter to create a single line instead of the trouble of creating a liquid sky.

On another note I think one of the cooler and easier effects is the old 'shoot lasers at a rigged CD player trick'

Here is an example
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1212648360/16#16

With a few red and green lasers and a little time lapse on your photoshoot (something you'll use anyway to get good beam shots)

you'll end up with red green and yellow!!

That should be plenty futuristic and not hit the wallet hard. I'd say total cost could be $50 for 2 greens, 2 reds, and a few dated portable CD players.

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

also, if you add in your defraction grating before shooting the lasers down at the CD player then you'll get multiple reflections.

Another alternative to making liquid skies is to just add a line generating filter as seen here
http://www.aixiz.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_31&products_id=39

This will spread your beam out into a line. A few of these added to a few green lasers could easily create the effect you want. The price would be about the same as the CD player method, but the results would look different.

You also wouldn't be able to obtain the color addition of green+red = yellow although it may still be possible in time lapse

You could also make an interesting grid pattern if you used crosshair filters

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

Curious,
Anyone know of a device that does the effects i think they called 'time tunnel' (rotating circular beam, looks cool with fog) and 'liquid sky' (1 flat plane maybe called 'Laser Single-Axis Sheet')...
When i was Youtubing, I saw the 'American DJ Galaxian Sky' does a liquid sky, but maybe not time tunnel. I want to keep it under $300 :)

sidenote: the 'American DJ GALAXIAN - Red, Green - Yellow Solar System Effect Laser Projector' also looks real neat. haha maybe ill double my budget and get 2 systems like that :)

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

You asked this on LaserCommunity too didn't you? I guess you got no real help there? ;) One thing that is totally impractical is having 100 lasers. You could try setting up a basic spirograph or scanner to create the effect you desire.

Have you thought about simply green-screening this? It would probably be easier and safer. I will probably get killed for saying this on here though ::)

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

Adding the effects in with photo editing software would be cheapest.

But if you want the "liquid sky" effect, a cylindrical lens will do.
It does the same thing.

You can get a pulsed green laser (http://z-bolt.com/BTG4-green-laser-pointer.html) and make a "time tunnel" with a cd player motor and a mirror and you'll get a neat dashed circle something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Dg7PIzevI

There's no need for all the expensive toys if you're just going to use it once.

Rog's idea would be good if you just got a couple cheap lasers and a line generating optic (http://www.aixiz.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_31&products_id=39) from aixiz or something.

Hell, all you really need to do is set up a cheapie display, snap a couple photos, and fix up the ones you like with photoshop... with a little effort you can make the beams brighter and even change the colors...
Photoshop is the closest you'll get to a fairy godmother ;)

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

charlie bruce, I have a green screen but was looking to get some laser-action going on :)

RA_pierce, Just wondering, where is the mirror placed on the cd player?, I would assume center (based on tutorials i watched where the mirror placed angled in the center of a motor creating a cone/tunnel, which makes sense to me).... But cd players have a hole in the center where nothing spinning i think so cant put it there. Otherwise you have a laser pointing at the cd itself with a spinning mirror attached to it that the laser wont hit except when it passes by every rotation.

Also how exactly is the similar PC Fan effect done. Seems like some people did time tunnels with that but again i dont understand how the mirror is placed on the PC Fan. seems like if it isn't in the center, then not sure how this effect is done.

For a scanner/liquid sky effect, how can that be built easily(i think someone mentioned a line generating optic)? i saw a tutorial where a mirror vibrated horizontally really fast, and seems like how they did a scan effect for more $$$ :), but i guess it would look cooler than the line optic. (anyone got pics to post of their simple effect setups?)

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

Pictures show how to mount mirrors for sky and tunnel.

The 2 sided sky mirror needs to be absolutely vertical so that you get just one line.
Tunnel mirror needs to be slightly tilted.

Re: I want to hook up 100 lasers to turn on a swit

Thanks Rog8811 for all the setup pics!,
I think ill end up buying a Galaxian for the top of my 'time machine', and many green lasers to use with some motors/pc fans and try to create some cool effects.
Good tutorial on this site too: laserpointerforums_com/lc_view_project.php?aid=17
