I want a super burning laser

To use the Prime example of Andy_con, he recently suffered a hit from a 500mW red, and apparently has a very bad dot in his vision. Full story here.

Ok so.....
im gonna start by making a small red burning laser, and if that works, ill dump some cash on a bigger bader laser.. :)

300mw seems like a good size from youtube has been showing....
looks like you can make one out of a dvd burner diode like I have...

I suppose now I need a circuit for it, and a lense?
 
Put the diode in an aixiz housing, that will be your lens , and it's focusable to ;)

ive got the housing from a cheap ass radio shack laser pointer.. but I suppose thats no good huh?
I think its only a 5mw...
it was expensive 10 years ago... 100 bucks.. lol...
but it will shine a long ass ways.. somethin like 300 yards easy and keep a decent size dot...

what is the best circuit design... ive noticed a couple diff ones....
 
DrLava has the Lavadrive if you want a pointer(runs from batteries) and the FlexMod if you want a lab style laser (plug it in to the wall)

i am a strong believer in drlava stuff.

aixiz module are available everywhere. (google it)

cheap ass housing is a no go probably (pic would be nice)

300 yards (900 feet) is nothing.
 
If you're serious about cutting/burning you should look into a small CO2 laser system. These are water cooled glass tubes and emit in the very long wavelength IR (invisible) but will burn just about anything.

If you just wanna be able to burn dark materials and make them smoke, etc then an open can red would be a much cheaper solution ;)
 
alright...
so I went out and bought a blank piece of circuit, a lm317t regulator, in4001 silicon diode, push button switch, and two 10uf16v pieces... or should they be 10mf16v?
either way i Have them... and I have a laser diode, and a mag light, only thing I dont have is the aixiz...
 
You must have an Aixiz or DX housing for heatsink and focus assembly. You now have about 75% of your kit. Limiting resistors will also be needed as posted on this forum.

limiting resistors?

I didnt see any limiting resistors in the plan I looked at on another thread here....
do you mean a potensiometer?
