I need your help for an egg drop competition!

Real nuclear waste transport vessels use fins on the outside (this may be against the rules?), which are designed to deform on impact, and so increase the stopping time/distance. Do some googling for nuclear fuel casks - but if the anti-terror police come knocking on your door, don't blame me :whistle:
 





Well I tested it and it worked! I didnt even need the parachute or sack of cornstarch and water. Apparently when we do the real contest tommorrow they with make the casks tumble when they throw them. I want to put a small 4 foot parachute on it now just for fun but I need an idea of how I could get it to open while the decohedron cask tumbles. The parachute is not nessecary because the cask can survive without it I tested it without it today. I just want a parachute because it looks awasome! So how do I get one to open while the cask tumbles?
 
instead of having a parachute that opens.. you can use and tie something at the top to create drag so that the cask orients itself properly and reduce the tumbling as it drops.

like an aptly named drag chute skydivers use especially for tandem jumps...
mostly known as a pilot chute.. but sure.. you get the idea

you tested it with the gravel too right, i assume? you can place that as a weight at the bottom to also orient it.

Yeah I tested it with an egg and some gravel. Wood a single piece of string with a crumpled ball of paper at its end be a good pilot chute?
 
you can just make yourself a itty bitty chute from that garbage bag or whatever plastic bag..

shoot... whatever is large in surface area and lightweight that'll create drag will work.
(i would say nay on the crumbled ball)
 
I dont know how I would deploy a safety back up parachute. How would I do that?

No I havent tried the mini chute yet, I still have the 3 foot shoot attached. Is that about the right size? 3 feet?
 
Never mind i worked out that for a 1000g load you will need between 115.9 cm (45.6 in) to 149.0 cm (58.7 in) diameter parachute. If it weighs more then that tell me and ill do the maths!

I worked out the maths for it before! (assuming you want it to slow down this much) its aroun 45in you need
 
I meant for a small parachute that will produce just enough drag to stop the dodecahedron from tumbling.
 
ohh i c.. umm not that big.. maybe 10-15 cm in dia maybe a bit bigger test it out see how it goes.
 
soooo any vid/pics of how it all went down! or any word on if it worked or failed! im very intersted in seeing the results!
