Brikalanik,
I realize it is confusing when you thought it would be a simple question. This may not be the greatest example but it turns out it's more like shopping for a car with many brands and choices within those brands and then options. You can spend a little or a lot but you have to do your homework first and discern what is hype versus real value.
Many of the safety devices that come with the vehicles are required by law and you have to have insurance to drive it away.
Now you can drive the vehicle away without wearing your seatbelt but you are not only putting yourself in danger but others if you choose not to wear it. You might be able to get away with not having insurance and driving it off the lot but again, this affects not only you but all the rest of us such as higher insurance costs and court fees and stricter laws if anything should happen.
We are ADAMANT about safety here as we are trying to protect what rights we still have with our lasers. If you've seen the news lately you would know that they are being scrutinized and many are calling for them to be banned all together.
Safety isn't just about yourself anymore. It can and does have a huge impact on all those users that are responsible users.
It was rightfully brought up that just because someone understands safety and has good practices with something else does not mean they know laser safety or would choose to follow proper etiquette.
Try not to take personal offense to some of the comments. We have heard the same question you are asking thousands of times and it just naturally gets old having to address it. We are VERY protective of our hobby and safety is a "first, last and always" here.
IF you are really serious about this and know in your heart that he WILL take heed of how to handle one then I would highly suggest you at the very least print off some of the safety info. our members have written and go over it with him or better yet, have him take a look at this site directly.
I realize that you probably want to surprise him but buying a high powered laser has to be thought of as buying a gun and giving it to someone when they have never owned one before. These are NOT toys even though they sound like they are. There are plenty of people who think they know how to safely handle a gun and then shoot themselves.
I can purchase 3 different color laser pens for $14 that will output up to 30 times the legal limit just as they are. Pens like those are marketed in general as play things but in reality can easily damage the eyes permanently. Can't imagine how many peoples pets have eye damage because they are so readily available.
Again, understand that the reports of lasers being used inappropriately has skyrocketed and the FBI is involved and ready to prosecute the foolish.
On the very plus side of things most guys here couldn't imagine having a wife or girlfriend that would do what you want to do
If you do follow through and buy him one ABSOLUTELY make him crazy by purchasing 2 sets of safety glasses so you can be a part of the whole experience! Don't do it if you aren't looking for a marriage proposal though Lol
SAFETY FIRST, LAST AND ALWAYS
Pete
