Hurricane Irma

Yes, there's a reason why hurricane prediction models look like this.

0-hurricanes-564x272.jpg

Sadly that's the best we can do at the moment. The longer ahead the more uncertain the location becomes.

Predicting what will be hit in say 12 hours is doable, but where it will hit the US mainland -exactly- is not possible even a few days in advance.

A similar issue exists with islands: it's very hard to tell if a hurricane will sweep over it and destroy everything, or just pass by on the side leading to crazy waves and all but little destruction.

This holds true in both the atlantic and pacific - for example in the philipines it's often hard to predict what island(s) will be hit even a day in advance.

good morning everyone... Irma has made landfall, gulf side. all over the news right now.

at this point if you havent evacuated yet youre pretty much f***ed. i can imagine really really bad traffic from people who didnt feel like evacuating before.

EDIT: this picture seems to change from day to day, so this is no longer accurate to back when i originally posted this

Irma went right over a turtle hebailitation center in the Florida Keys I visited back in 2014. Called the "Turtle Hospital". Hope they evacuated, and the turtles! :(

The NOAA radar will move to the next radar site as you navigate the map.

I'm glad a lot of people evacuated, I do hope everyone comes through alright.

Even here in Atlanta we are supposed to get 55-65 mph winds, that may not sound like much but our summer tree overgrowth is more than the line crews can keep up with, we will likely lose power, but I have plenty of gas for our generator.

Funny thing I noticed at 2 different wal-marts, all the flashlights and camping lanterns are sold out.

we are having something similar where i am, even schools out so thats okay

Power has been out since 3pm. House and trees held up. The wind from the band's is freaking nuts this feels like a cat 2 from across the state. The west coast oh man...from Tampa south can't be good. What a beast.

Still very happy I moved away from the Gulf Coast. Don't miss stuff like this a bit. Wonder how many more there will be this year.

Curtis, I spent all day trying to push you over 70K and still can't do it. I will try again tomorrow.

Just been watching some of the footage on the news. Doesn't look pleasant.

Thanks Paul, can't rep you again yet either. :yh:

Tampa won't suffer too badly, I think. Category one for them now. I was worried, one of my daughters is still there.

Irma has lost A LOT of strength as soon as it starting hitting more land areas with less warm, tropical/subtropical ocean waters. This is still a hurricane, so don't take it for granted. Goodluck!
