whoa whoa....ok...let me set this straight. pin-out varies with the diode in question.

this diode is intended to run at 2.35V @ 205mA @ 660nm for 150mW or so of power if i'm not mistaken.

the pinout with them oriented so the case pin is on top is 3 on the left, 2 above (case), and 1 on the far right, making a triangle.

pin 3 is the negative (cathode) and pin 1 is the positive (anode) the case pin is not used (NC) the diode is case isolated, and it does not have a photodiode monitor. if you intend to use the casing as one of the connections, you'll have to bridge that case pin with whatever contact you intend to use it as.

for example: if you want to use the case as your negative contact, you would need to solder a wire between pin 2 and the negative input on the driver.

My apologies irishluck and ultimatekaiser for my misinformation...I will go read some more.

Not to worry. It wasn't directed at you , but rather the whole thread. We're all here to learn and have fun. Just want to get the facts correct so we can carry on.

yes read a LOT more--

Q..
have you touched the diode w/o esd protection? is so it may be dead

have you pressed the diode(most buy a tool to do this) and put that into a heat sink_ did you set the mA with a dummy (test) load- as setting it with the actual diode is NO GOOD.

the correct pin-out varies NOT all 'reds' are the same--

we members often are reluctant to give advice as we do not know how much experience you have- or if you own the right gear--
Not to insult but.. I hope you have a full understanding about things like 'shorting ALL caps'
ESD safe soldering station
ESD wrist strap
and much much more--

In order to answer a single question from you we have a dozen to ask you first--

while it will take some digging almost every answer you seek can be found here by searching.. good luck!!

I've read quite a lot, like to tinker with electronics and soldering, have a few builds with homemade drivers and managed to get six 5.6 red diodes from 23 DVD burners in the last couple of months. My question is a ml101u29 diode different than what I've harvested. If you have 2 pins on top and the case pin on the bottom I've always used the case for neg. and the top right pin for pos.Plus if the left top pin's not a photodiode what is it?Not trying to start anything just curious what the pin is that nobody uses

If there isn't a photodiode, it could be for IR in a dual diode, but most of the time it's not connected to
anything. In an open can diode it is pretty easy to tell using a microscope.

As far as I know its throttled down. I think the driver does that.
12v going into the driver and 7.35 coming out which is set at 200ma. and i did test the driver.
Its got power everywhere, even at the diode leads. Just the diode isnt turning on

Heres a layout of the laser diode
Ive got positive to pin 3 and negative to pin 1

EDIT: Are you guying saying that since this has a continuous ground that the ground from the diode itsself has to be directly connected to the 12v power supply?

from the diagram you need + to pin 3 and - to pin 2
