How robust are laser diodes?

Hey Guys

I just pressed my 405nm laser diode into my module, Or hammerd it more like it.
I hammered it side by side with a flat blade screw driver. Didnt use much forst just the palm of my hand. Im biulding he driver so cant test it but do you guys know from expeirence if the diodes are easily damaged??

Well i dont know how you even got it in that way but diodes are very sensitive.. Not only esd but also impact. I killed a few diodes myself and i can tell you they die quite easy..

My guess that if this thing still works flawless you dodged a bullet!

Good luck anyway! You should buy a diode press tool in the future.

I haven't hammered a diode in but I have subjected some to some pretty brutal force.
One time I had to make an adjustment to the outer diameter of a module so I spun it in a drill and sanded it down real quick.
Just as I turned it off, it came loose and the diode module flew across the room and hit the wall hard enough to put a small dent in the drywall.
One of the solder joints to the driver came loose but after fixing that everything was OK.

There's only one way to find out: fire it up.
I think that it will be fine as long as you didn't smack the hell out of it.
 
Don't use shock method like hammering it. Put it in a vice and slowly turn the pressure on. Steady force is better.

Ill make up a jig for future. Iv finished building the driver so ill Let ya know when i fire it up.

It depends on the diode. You might be alright if you drop it on the ground but Im not sure about hitting one with a hammer lol. Ive dropped a couple different diodes on the ground by accident and they usually still work but one of them lost some power. One time a pin broke off a 200mw red diode and I tried to solder it back on but the heat killed it.
 
I didnt acctually hit it with a hammer i put a screw driver against that back of it and hit the screw driver with my hand.
 
The shock from the hammer will travel along the screw driver to the diode. It could shatter the glass windows or the tiny wires in the diode. Still no go with a hammer.
 
Pin-outs are straight forward if the diode is on side with the unused pin facing out to the right, the top pin is positive. The unused pin is the one that is just a locator it is part of the chassis.

Yer the diode still worked fine lol. I donat have a power meter but just running it at its 300mw rating so far.
