How many here use linux?

Okay. I meant faster than Vista, faster enough so that the change is worth?

Again, what is your goal? If you want pure speed, downgrade to 2000 or XP. If you want immunity from viruses and spyware, go for unix. If you want the most functionality, go for Mac. Linux is mostly comprised of all these specified elements. As for speed, it should be faster; just keep in mind that this could differ between computers.

Tried to partition my hard drive to run Ubuntu cuz I loved it so much, but it didn't work :( ugh.

Anyways I am going to go get windows 7 :)

I added windows XP on multi boot and trust me that I couldn't feel any difference on speed. IMO XP on 64 bits is even slower than Vista on 64 bits, at least on my PC (8GB RAM etc etc).

Well, he is after all a professional security expert... I guess he needs to use it for his job. Not all "hacker tools" are used for black-hat purposes you know, people often have a legitimate need to hack their own network to test security.

Thats true.. didnt think of that lol.. i have only ever used it 2-3 times and only used it to hack my own network.. well sort of..

im using the ff..

Redhat
Ubuntu and CentOS

redhat mutliboot with my Windows XP sp2 on my lab desktop

Ubuntu with Windows 7 and Vista on my Laptop

CentOS with Parallel Desktop (MAC OS)

my CentOS is being used as my Cabal Private Server feeder...

:) it works great!!

My cellphone, the Palm Pre, runs linux. Very nice.

And very open. Palm gives you everything you need to access the linux underneath, and root access is pretty much already enabled by default. It's fun to play around with. I'm actually running a light webserver on my phone right now, which serves up a php page that displays a google map of the location of the phone using the phone's built-in GPS. Very nice. Lots of cool stuff you can do with full root access to you phone.

And I've played with/used linux quite a bit, I'm pretty comfortable on command line. I don't have any computers running it right now, just not worth it to me at the moment with my current free time situation.

fav. linux command is dd

makes cloning harddrives so easy and makes software like norton ghost look useless lol... just boot to USB into knoppix or fedora and run DD and make image bit for bit of ur HD for backup ;)

We use Linux for the backup server we keep at our house. I forget exactly which flavor...
