How many diodes have you killed?

I was wondering how many diodes have died at the hands of forum members. :'(

I've heard of quite a few people buying only one LD and I can't imagine very many of those are still working, but maybe I'm just clumsy. :D

So far, I've killed two. One harvested from a DVD burner and one Senkat GB diode.

*Note* Mods, feel free to move this to Other if that would be more appropriate.

Wow Mike! You sounds like a serial murderer. ;) I guess you really are the expert on LD failure modes. Did most of them turn LED or were they REALLY tosted?

:(   Sad LED's   :(    At the top end, they last just so long.

I accidently hit an open can red with 1.5 AMPS !!! That diode was a brute !!  I never saw the flash,  It just became an LED.....

I've posted many times about pushing the limit but few seem to read it.  With the GB diodes, you're on your own over about 250 mA.  Even then, diodes vary in their "personality".  :D   Don't blame SenKat......

I shoot big guns, big fireworks and I push these little diodes hard.

Mike

I wouldn't think of blaming Greg. There is no doubt in my mind just whose fault it was. lol

I have only killed 1 (two if you cound the 5mw that died at the hands of a hammer to give me a heatsync/lens for my DVD-RW diode) my senkat GB diode is still working beautifully, though it's not even 100% installed, I only popped it in as a PoC to myself to prove I really COULD build my own laser. I plan to do more with it when I get a chance, probably a flashlight-to-laser mod, and I'm sure I'll eventually kill it.

I'm also hoping to nab a few Bluray diodes in the upcomming GB, and I expect to kill atleast one if not 2 of those before it's over.

;D The first time Mike posted about the 1.5 amps I rolled on the floor...I still laugh when I think about it...lol He sent that one to the electric chair.

Well I am up to 12 that have been read their last rites. One died before it was given life (slipped with the cutters while harvesting) and on one the positive leg came loose so it at least died happy. The other 10...well... ::)

I only have one high powered diode, which is one of the 200mW GB diodes, and it's still alive and kicking, I know it's at least running steady at >80mW on NiMh AA's :)

If we are talking GB reds, none so much as injured...so far :)
Greenies 2 dead 1 walking wounded.... :-[

I have killed 2 small red lasers when trying to take the diode out and unsolder some parts.. you know i was an "diode-idiot" then, and didn't know that heat would kill diodes..

Two - The first before I knew better by hooking it up to 3V without current limiting - Turned into an LED instantly. :-[
The 2nd by cracking the window in trying to remove it from its heatsink.
Now I use a dremel to cut away the heatsink so I don't have to hit on the diode.

4 for me.. all from powering crappy 4x speed diodes with just 2AA battries ( back when i didnt know about "diode + overpower = posh led" all old drives from my work.. no loss hope i dont kill any gb diodes im only buying 4 and i wanna make 4 lasers 3 to sell (locally sorry) 1 to keep
