It works like a light bulb. If you sent current thu then the filament heats up and it gives light. The same way as laser diodes.

how about if the diode/laser module has greater current, then it would heat up rapidly and the battery would drain rapidly too? is that right?

The higher the current, the faster the battery drains. It is so obvious. Energy isn't free.
