Just found this surfing around. Thought it was pretty interesting, all be it short. The beam shaping part is pretty neat.

Enjoy if you haven't seen it yet.

Very interesting!
Nitrogen, carbon dioxide and helium? Interesting.. A really big CO2 laser with the other cases as a buffer or to help excite the CO2?

Huge bore and mirrors, I'm guessing its a multi kilowatt device.

The other gasses in a CO2 laser are both to low it's operating voltage, and in the case of sealed lasers, act as a catalyst to recombine the used gas back to CO2.

Ahh, interesting,i didn't know that Dan.
I was going to get a mill for making PCB's at one stage, but I have heard of using a CO2 laser to burn resist (i think they used paint) off a board, that's a good excuse for buying a CO2 laser. Of course one this size could just cut the copper!

3.2kW RF-excited CO2 laser resonator cavity, by Trumpf. Watched this episode last night saw it on the DVR :)

Kewl. Id love to own a laser cutter for random stuff. Noting in mind. Just a bunch of random metal shapes. haha.
