have to disagree with you, ultimatley you can build direct drive lasers, given the right circumstances
as i mentioned earlier I have done it before, and so have others,
just not with these specific circumstances.

You can also play russian roulette and pull the trigger 5 times without getting shot. It's just not very smart.

Direct driving is like drunk driving. Many people get away with it, but that doesn't mean it's a smart thing to do.

There's that 3V across the terminal initially. So the initial current will correlate with the initial voltage. Only after the laser has been on for a few milliseconds will the internal resistance kick in. That's where the spike comes in. A cap across the laser terminals is the bare minimum you would need.
 
I have mentioned several times that i will be using a driver with my build.
Im really not trying to argue, just having some fun.
