Hooking up Xbox Live

Now with MW2 out I really want Xbox live. I have a 360 and halo and a couple other games but never really wanted live for some reason. So what is the best method? My xbox is in my basement and my computer is directly above it on the first floor (I don't know if that matters). I'm not sure if I can hook a router up to our standard crappy Comcast Modem. It has three ports in the back, one for power, one for the cable and one for out to the computer and all are filled. Is there any other method? I was thinking about maybe buying a very long cable but I think I would have to unplug the computer's internet every time I wanted to play live, which wouldn't go over so well with the family. Thanks for the help.
 





If your computer has a second Ethernet port on the back you can plug it in there and set up a bridged connection.
 
So Crazy Jay, it seems like that video is just to ensure a good connection. So I could buy those things, then all I need to do is figure out how to hook the router up. My computer only has one ethernet port and that goes to the ethernet port in the modem (it's a standard dell computer). So I guess I'm going with an ethernet splitter to hook up the router? I don't want to make one, does anyone have a link to a pre made one? Thaks again, this thread has helped a lot already.

Edit: Could I plug one of these adaptors into the modem so that the router would be connected to one and the computer would be connected to the other? If so which one?

I can't advise you unless I know what I'm looking at. Can you give me a picture of your modem and the back of your computer?
 
Pictures: Maybe in the coming week, but for now would any of the adaptors on this website work or am I better off just heading to Radioshack

By the way my modem is a Motoraola surfboard SB3100 Cable Modem, you might be able to find pics of one on ebay. My computer is a standard Dell Dimension E310.

Saw the way it looks in the back for your modem. I looked at radioshack and they don't have any pictures of the product they are selling.

But heres a start look here

Now I have never used one of these so it's up to you.
You might want to get this adapter and run a line through the floor.
 
Plug the modem into the router wan. Then plug your PCs and X-Box into one of the router ports all turned off. Unplug the power to the router, then press the "little" reset button in back of the modem for 5 seconds, release the button and wait till all the lights light up and plug your router back in. If you are not using a wireless router it will configure itself.
 
ZRTMWA If you ever want your xbox hacked let me know. The custom firmware has a stealth mode thats safe for playing LIVE. But when you want to play offline you can play with any legal copy that you wish to make. I have the burner for that as well.

Among other things too.
 
That adaptor looks about right to what I need Crazy Jay.

My router is wireless...
 
You could buy the expensive official Xbox 360 wireless adapter. Its priced at 100 bucks but I saw it for around 60 on amazon. It might be cheaper to get that than buy all this other stuff
 
Hey Jay are you talking about a soft mod or a hard mod?
 
Ah, I must have missed the part about that, my bad. I looked into doing that myself, but I'm not sure my xbox is compatible and the guide I looked at made it seem pretty complicated.

Well, I can flash the firmware which would be a soft mod.
Making a higher capacity harddrive is both.
Replacing a defective DVD drive requires both as well.

I like the 360. But I hate the fact that microsoft made it so that it only takes official products. And they charge a fortune for them too. :(

The good thing about the PS3 is that you can replace the parts without a problem even the harddrive is plug and play.
