OK, I had a great idea. Lets get some holographic plates or film plus some chemicals to develop said plates/film. Only problem is, the stuffs expensive. Or rather they are cheap in bulk. Can get 30 2.5"x2.5" plates or 4"x5" film for roughly $100. Chemicals are $17. Then we all get to try our hands at Holograms. Either Transmission (which require a laser to see) or reflective (which can be seen in normal light.)

We would also provide instructions on how to do a hologram.

Any takers?

Essentially it would work out to 30 participants at $5-10 each. (includes shipping) Would include 1 plate or film and enough chemicals to develop it.

I wanted to get this stuff a long time ago, but yeah, was too expensive. I would probably be in. Question though, what is the difference between plate vs. film? I know I can probably look it up, but it would also be easier for future buyers if they read it here.
 
I did some holograms in high school after reading a book called the holography handbook. Lots of great instructions for home made vibration isolation tables, setups and calculations. with the power we have today I'm not sure you even need vibration isolation any more. Would be fun to try it again.
 
well the difference in plate vs film is just the thickness and composition of the material. A plate is a coated peice of glass that has the chemicals doped onto it. The film is just a thin plastic film that has been doped. The nice thing about a film is that you can bend it as you are exposing it and move the film around your item and create movement when developed. An example of this is a woman who winks and blows a kiss at you. If you have the woman outside a tube going through the motions and rotate the film so that it's being brought into the light to be exposed, it will record that on the film.

I think this explanation is not quite right if I understand your explanation correctly. Normally, glass plates are much easier to work with than film since glass is rigid. Film is used mainly since the substrate is cheaper and probably easier to coat than glass. Holographic film needs to be clamped between glass plates before exposure, and often you need index matching to get rid of wood grain effects.

Movements in holograms are made with the stereographic technique, where you project one image from a film of say a winking woman onto a screen and then make a hologram of this screen image by exposing it onto a thin strip of the holographic film. Then you project the next image of the movie on the screen and expose this onto a thin strip next to the other on the hologram (H1). By doing this up to thousands strips on a single holographic plate, and then make a new hologram (H2) of this first hologram (H1) with strips you get a stereogram which then can display movement as the viewer move along the hologram.
 
^ or a cylindric hologram (mean, a cylinder made with lots of strips, that you expose for each position of the object) .....

As in that old science fiction film of the '76, Logan's Run ..... where they used the same system for build the images of Logan head in 3D, that was talking in rotation ..... they took an hologram for each pair of degrees all around the head, then mounted them as a cylinder, and put a lamp inside (and, as far as i remember, that one was the first use of this system, with holograms, for make a 3D moving holographic effect in a film)

Yes, those are cylindrical white light viewable rainbow transmission holographic stereograms (multiplex holograms).
 
Yeah I talked with the prof and he said that it was just a lot of holograms set side by side and as it spins it brings a new hologram into view. Very cool.

Actually you better make it 3 plates for me. It was pretty hard to get it right the first time if I remember correctly

If you're making reflective holograms, i hope you have a freq-stabilized laser.
