And just to show that I'm not going to let a little something like blindness in one eye keep me down, I finished the contraption that started this whole mess, except this time using a <100mW greenie instead. :D See results:

Darn, jumping right back on the horse?

I'd probably stay away from laser for a bit after an experience like this, at least until you know what the chances of recovery on your damaged eye are. I sincerely hope you make a full recovery, but until you do, "do not stare into beam with remaining eye" seems like sound advise!

Anyone want to send him one of those shirts ?
How about a good picture of one ?
Sounds like he won't be offended.

And if he is, his lack of depth perception means he won't be able to hit us...

All kidding aside, get better soon.
You have paid your dues.

This isnt a good thing to joke about and I really hope you have no permanent damage, but this shirt completely matches you :D.

Actually I find that after tragedies I really can't do anything else except either laugh or cry.

I prefer to laugh. Always.

On a serious side note, I was checking out an old greenie of mine, and left it on the table, turned on. I brushed it and it rolled. Reflected off of the shiny side of a 9V battery.

If I hadn't been wearing goggles at the time... would have been bad. Very bad, since the beam diameter and divergence on the laser is excellent.

Im glad that you are safe. From now on im going to make sure to put my lasers on a surface that they cant roll on and hit me in the eye:) (Yes, I always wear the proper glasses but i would rather not take risks.)

Wow he is straight back to doing it. There is a real possibility of permanent life changing damage, but he continues anyway? Wow.

If I did this I would be reconsidering if the fun/risk ratio is really worth it anymore, and try and understand how it happened.

I think we're all interested in the final outcome, so please do report back here... And definitely good that you did go and take care of this.. most people wouldn't. If you hadn't acted sooner, this surgery may have been too late to mitigate anything... So hopefully things could work out... I certainly hope they do, and the prognosis could have been worse...

I know "could have been worse" is not much solace because things are pretty bad, but... this event might have saved you from a worse event in the future.

One thing I will say i learned is that if you have a laser injury to your eye, don't bother going to a regular hospital ER. If it was like mine, they will just scratch their head and be like "I've never seen anything like this before" and refer you to a specialist. If you're fortunate enough to have an eye foundation hospital with an ER nearby like I was, go there first. If not, you may as well wait until the next day (definitely no longer) to see a retina specialist that can help you. My retina doc doesn't seem to have a problem with making me wait until Tuesday for surgery, so one day shouldn't make that big of a difference.

However, not everyone will have the same situation as me so it may always be a good idea to have it checked anyway just in case your injury could be more serious.

Also, attached are some retina pictures for everyone's amusement. The first one is a healthy retina that i pulled from Google images, the second is my busted retina with a red blob of blood in the middle :p

i don't think we needed a healthy looking retina to see what is wrong with your one

even though the black is your blood, still kinda looks like an actual burn

you should contact the people who run the website in my signature, they may be interested in your story

That might attract negative attention to this forum. I don't recommend it.
The situation is unpleasant enough as it is.

I have three pairs of glasses just for my friends and family. I use my glasses as a kind of warning. "hey this laser is so cool you need safety glasses!" they usually get a kick out of it. Being that I won't hand my laser to anyone I feel safe but this is a great example of accidents happen. Hoping your surgery goes well and do appreciate you shAring the story. Accidents happen. We all feel for you. Here's hoping that this story might save someone else's eyesight.
