Help With Ophir Head and Panel Meter-1 Battery

Here's a fun question that would have been worth asking at the outset:

Where can I actually order a IQ0509S? Neither Mouser nor Digikey stock it...?!?

Some times you need to design around part availability
and the possible future discontinuation of that Part...

Besides the RY-0905D-ND part is 9Volts in and 5Volts
out... Not really what you want..

RS components have a lot of them, too

Convertitori cc-cc | Compra Convertitori cc-cc con consegna in 24/48 ore | RS Components

I don't know if you can open the same pages i get from their site (they filter results by nations), anyway those are the part numbers i've found, for 5Vin -> +/-9Vout units, if you need to search them directly:

MEA1D0509SC
NMH0509DC
NKA0509SC
NMK0509SC
NMJ0509SC
NTV0509MC
NTA0509MC
NMA0509SC
NMH0509SC
NMV0509SC
RB-0509D

Almost all from Murata, except the last one from Recom.

Boy would I love some help :)

After the IQO509S twice arrived as the wrong part, I decided to go with Jib77's circuit found here:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f67/driver-circuit-thread-65149.html#post935277

I'm starting to feel like the universe doesn't want me to have any better way of driving my Ophir than the 9V battery approach.

Because using Jib's circuit, I don't *really* get a split rail. I get -4.5V and +7.5V. I'm going to basically post my whole schematic and PCB (which, btw, anyone is free to use - assuming we can spot the fault, and it's useful to others).

Here are the exact parts use:
Digi-Key - 497-7171-5-ND (Manufacturer - BD437)
Digi-Key - BD438STU-ND (Manufacturer - BD438STU)
http://www.digikey.ca/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?x=0&y=0&lang=en&keywords=LM358NFS-ND

And attached is the schematic and board.

Yo, I have a 5V -> +/-12V DC/DC converter you can have if you want. Just pay shipping. >_>

Filter it with caps and Bob's your uncle.

I'll definitely take you up on that.

But I'd also really love to get ^ working.

So, I would say the substitute of the BD437 could be the BD187 or the 2N5191.

And for the BD438 could be the BD188 or 2N5194.

But check it anyway.

That doesn't help a whole ton since I can't find the 2N5191 or 2N5194 in surface mount either ;)

I would add that I don't actually need collector current to be up in the Amps. Something like 500mA should be more than sufficient, and the power doesn't need to be 40W either. A few W should be more than adequate.

I see, I missed the "surface mount" :(

Between English and the fine print on my phone

Look here, try looking through the filters, or directly in transistors listed below, there are 134 pages.

Maybe you find exactly what you want.

Edit: Well I guess you already know this anyway.
In SMD components I cannot help more, sorry.

Discrete Semiconductor Products | Transistors (BJT) - Single | Digi-Key

That's largely what I did to find these:
Digi-Key - KST42MTFCT-ND (Manufacturer - KST42MTF)
Digi-Key - MMBT5401FSCT-ND (Manufacturer - MMBT5401)

I just sort of need a sanity check, as I'm not terribly familiar with transistors myself. I want to make sure I'm not overlooking some obvious incompatibility.

Just do a parametric search on a manufacturers website (nxp, national semicondictor etc) to find a suitable transistor. I presume you do not need an exact equivalent, just something that meets or exceeds the specifications of the 437 and 438?
