hey fan and friends of LPF

I got a hold of a old e-machine dvd rw and the diodes are little on the strange side.. the are rectangle in shape I know one is a 600 series nm and the other is ir I do not know which and how to even go about testing these things any help would be greatly appreciated

You have to give it more than half a day. IIRC these rectangular diodes are never anything special, not high powered at least.

I knew that it was not going to be anything special Crazy.. I just never seen one and I have not a clue on how to go about testing it is all I am doing a lot of looking to find out the specs on it on the net but its hard I thought I would try here first ty for the help

There are a couple threads on them somewhere, one i remember had a pretty funky output. Besides all of this, they are (obviously) hard to mount to anything

yea i have found a site that pics of them and they can be mounted but have a weird splatter effect... I pulled it apart to see what kind of diodes were in there and these came out thanks for the hlep

Ty Lighting I know one is Ir and the other is 600 some thing nm now just have to find out which is which one and see if i can power the red one on... If any one wants a crack at them I can send them out tomorrow... I not up to this complexity yet

Once they are removed from a sled diodes are hard to tell apart-

& w/o the pin out ---you risk the diode trying--

you may not find out what they are unless you press them- and then put in heat sink then gradually power them up until the laser-

there are some micro photos that show what printed on some-if you can take such pics you stand a much better chance of finding out what they are..some may be worthless IR diode-as there is one in almost every sled- the are good for practice-both pressing and soldering.

Im willing to let these diodes go for nothing if any one wants them I do not have the supplies as of yet to work on them... If any one is intrested in them please pm me

that is PART of the laser diode graveyard at Pangolin at least one of nearly every diode one can ever find- they make 'Lasorbs' for most diodes and they protect your diode investment . (from spikes and ESD etc)
So in the process of making these there was lots of 'to death' testing
that pic was 'stolen' by me from Pangolin.com where you can find hours of good stuff to read- lots on ESD- building Laser projectors - safety and more

DO NOT read the stuff or see the demos of/on 'Quick Show'- one look can become an lifelong addiction-
don't say I never warned you!!

BTW just a quick heads-up, if your phone is so crappy in taking photos, it probably can't even focus so you can use a magnifier or a loupe and put it in front of the phone's camera, it helps loads and the image is clearer!
