Hey everyone, just wanted to say hello.

I've recently been looking at lasers and the fun things you can do with them.

However, I'm a total noob whenever it comes to lasers. I mean, I know a little

bit about them but not much.

I was looking to purchase a new laser for myself.. for my upcoming birthday this February. I'm wanting the most powerful laser I can get for around $100 to $150 dollars.

I've seen ones that can pop balloons and stuff like that.. I've been looking around but I'm not sure which ones are powerful enough to burn/pop stuff. Could someone tell me what minimum power range I should look for in order to be able to pop balloons/tires and the like?

Sure would be appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. - HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE. :)

I know, but you have to admit.. it would be cool! Also, I'm tired of people in my neighborhood picking on me and speeding around my house and down my street. The local police won't help me with these issues... so, I figure I may have to "fight fire with fire".. you know?

If I could find one powerful enough to pop a tire... I could increase my odds of not getting caught. I'm just getting sick and tired of getting picked on and harassed by my neighbors... and since the police won't help or do anything to put it to a stop.. well, I guess I have to take matters into my own hands.

so, 100mW to pop a balloon.. I can use that knowledge to figure out about how much power it would take to pop a tire, melt the paint on their car, and possibly melt and plastic pieces on their car.. maybe that would slow them down eh? Best part about it is, is with laser.. I can simply stay "incognito" while executing my plan.

I've been putting up with this crap for over 3 years now. Even got these people on video, via security camera mounted outside my house. Gave/showed it to the police and they still tell me that they can't do anything for me.. unless they physically see the people speeding by my house.. what a crock of shat. :yabbmad:

anyhow, thanks for the help and thanks for the warm welcome. :D

peace.

I would still recommend a more legal way of retaliation. 2000mW wont pop a tire (you shouldnt do it anyway) and car paint will reflect the laser right back at you. This is what gives lasers a bad name and wrecks the hobby for responsible people

I'm a responsible person my friend..

"more legal way of retaliation..." - Like I said, the lame police won't do anything unless they can catch the people in action with their own eyes.

The police in this city don't care about nor do they listen to "low level complaints" such as mine. Which is fine, when one of these speeding
a**holes come flying down my street or around my corner here and
end up killing one of the neighbors kids.. well, then maybe.. just maybe
they'll listen.

It's just a damn shame that today's society is the way it is. It's almost like someone has to lose their life in order to get any kind of response from our government officials. Quite sad IMO... quite sad. :undecided:

You say its irresponsible people like me that give the "laser" hobby a "bad name/rep"?? Hah, do you not realize that the only people responsible for giving the laser "hobby" a "bad name" is the government??!

The government has lasers right now.. and some that are currently in production mode, that are so powerful, that if they were ever pointed at
a human, that persons body would damn near instantly melt/disintegrate?

They also have lasers mounted on the front of "defense" planes, that if in the event one of the U.S. enemies were to ever fire a missle toward this country, all they have to do is point the laser in the direction of the incoming missle, and within mere seconds, the laser forces the missle to explode well before it could ever even get close to our coastlines.

Not to mention other "laser projects" that are currently in "trial mode" at certain U.S. military bases. One of which I know about but cannot talk about due to fear for my life and my families lives.

I've personally worked at two different "U.S. research facilities" (thats what the public knows them as) I personally call them military installations/bases.. because that's what they are.

Anyhow, don't blame me (just one person) for giving the "laser hobby" a bad rep. :tsk: Appreciate it.

peace..

Destruction of someone else's property is irresponsible. The streets were put there for driving, not as a playground. The government gets to do whatever they want, few people agree with this fact. It smells like troll so I'm getting out of here

I see a couple of problems with your ideas as put above.
A 300 mw laser will melt plastic and such but only when given enough TIME to do so. There is no quick ZAP type of unit that you can aim at a moving vehicle and pop a tire.
Even if you could, giving a driver a blow-out when cornering is a serious criminal offense due to the circumstances and potential for grave injury or major damage. So if anyone did have something that you could do it with they wouldn't likely offer it. Their liability in the offense would be undeniable.
-If you were to "accidentally" spill some finely crushed stone on the street and it just "happened" to get packed down into an unofficial speed bump that limits the speed of a passing vehicle, well that would only be coincidental. And as it would be clearly visible to motorists who were driving responsibly and legally then it couldn't be called a hazard either. Only drivers that are willing to admit that they were operating their vehicles in an unsafe and illegal manner would be able to complain.
And if you did have something to do as you want, don't you think the extremely bright line of light coming from you would be a dead give-away of what you are doing ? It wouldn't take much to follow the beam back to the source. If you were targetting a moving vehicle the sweep of the beam would make it simple and undeniable where it came from.
Besides, before you play with any higher powered lasers you need to have the proper safety equipment. There are a few members here that can unfortunately confirm the necessity of this simple step. Nobody plans on exposing themselves to harmful beams but it happens enough of the time that everyone should have some form of protection and safe practices for their lasers.

So play SAFE, be smart, and don't do anything that could cause problems for the rest of us. Governments are just looking for a reason to restrict or ban things enough.

Shining a laser at a car is a felony. AFAIK the LPF TOS(terms of service) does not allow such discussions that are criminal- if I am wrong the TOS needs amended.

Why not just video the actions that you object to. I did that and only needed to tell the driver what and why I was videoing him and he quit racing on my street. If you show your video to law enforcement I think you will get help from them. 'Fighting fire with fire' is just two wrongs which never adds up to being a one right. A witness would also strengthen your side.

And a laser that would burn a hole in a tire of a PARKED car would be way beyond what anyone could afford-as far as a moving car...forget that-- starwars stuff IMO. AND if you shine the laser into the car you would be the one in trouble.

First off it's not a very good idea to harass people with lasers as it is against the law.

If you think they won't know it's you then you are mistaken as all the have to do is follow the beam back to the laser in your hand.

about 100mW will pop a balloon, if you want to pop a car tire it's going to take at least 1000Watts and probably more and you are not going to find that in a hand held laser and not for $150.00

So now lets say you have your high power laser and you point it at the car and inadvertently hit a kid ridding in the car in the eye and you blind him, now what are you going to do ?

LOL There are a lot of problems with a plan like that. First the laser you would need would have to be from a research lab and second you would need laser safety glasses that would probably keep you from even seeing the car. Your best option is a video camera and a radar/laser speed gun which would be a few thousand dollars cheaper to prove how fast they are going, also get the plate number if your camera sucks.

the color is going to be important. Some colors burn better than others. I don't know what colors those are, but I've heard Violets burn better than blue in terms of mW. Green is the most visible for the lowest amount of power, so if you want to do something stupid and illegal, it would be better for you and others if you used a lower powered green laser. For balloon popping happiness, I recommend 200mW, mainly because the power on lasers drops after a short while. Anything over 5mW shining at people is going to get you into more legal trouble than you want to spend money on.

You can save yourself some time by spending your future lawyer fees on something much more effective than a balloon popping eye irritant.

After re-reading this thread and noting that your previous attempts at presenting video evidence of the culprits were refused I will add a few notes of experience.
To be used in court the video must clearly show the operator of the vehicle, the details of the vehicle, (as in proving which vehicle it was versus any other one of the same make and model year, color, etc.) and irrefutable proof of the offense in question.
And don't think that the local police will spend even 2 seconds on developing any of those parameters for you even if they could or wanted to.
So I doubt that your "security camera" footage had enough detail or evidence that could be prosecuted.
But that does open another option for you. Perhaps you might try a 4' x 4' (half a sheet of plywood) sign with big, friendly, easy to read from a distance letters that say "Smile ! You may be on video." or something to that effect. Keep it simple and short so it can be seen and understood at a glance. Keep the "may be" included in any/all variants as it is a legally protective phrase and leaves options open.
And around my neck of the world communities that have these problems usually petition the city to put in "speed reducing measures" for the area. Think of a speed bump that is 6 feet wide. More of a speed hump. Easily traveled at a lower speeds (even in low rider modified cars) and by emergency vehicles but at higher speeds they will trash the bottom of a car.
You just need to get the signatures of a few neighbors and take them to the local city planning department or authorities or politicians or ???.
Try out more of the LEGAL options before any emotionally charged desperation measures, OK ?
Then if you really want to use lasers try out some cheap low powered ones and set them up to look like they are monitoring speed with visible beams crossing the road where the tires would block them as they pass. (Around 2" off the road.) If they can just be seen by motorists at night, even if they didn't think they were anything legal they might slow down to try to figure out what and why they are there. Either way they would slow down...win/win.

I will say that this thread is full of all kinds of useful information even if discounting the OP's original malicious intentions.
Very interesting.

Ahh didn't see that you have security cameras. I have 5 around my house because of some ****heads stealing things from my yard and the neighbor kid busting out car windows, Got them after those incidents and all problems stopped. But did catch a domestic dispute which the cops liked the video even though the cameras are not high resolution, but still gave a good description and backed up the victims story. Was at night so they were in black and white mode but still made a difference. Funny thing is the person drove away after that and the victim got on the phone with the police and then called the perp and they drove back, got to watch the cops tail her and pull her over and arrest her. :)
