Hello everyone! Bird solution?

I purchased a 1watt 520nm green laser for this exact purpose. I don't shine it at their eyes only need to show the dot on the ground moving towards them and they move away quickly.
I started with a 5mw laser and worked great early morning or at dusk but during the day useless. This is the time when they are very active and getting ready to nest. I even went so far as to chase them with my Dji quad copter.

My dogs work great but they stop to eat the poop:barf:

Anyways I'm not comfortable using this laser and want to sell it. If anyone is interested in it I would just like to get what I bought it for.
I'm asking 500 comes with li batteries and charger.

That's very smart of you to recognize your uncomfortable with this laser. Could you send a pic I may be interested in buying it. Who made this unit?

Are you doing this during the night only?

I don't know much about bird behavior. Just kinda tossing some ideas out here for you.

- Would shining them with bright and maybe multi-colored and/or random flashing light scare them? Like some ultra bright flash lights?

- What if you combined your efforts with the call of some natural predator? Like an Owl or something? Or other loud noises? Perhaps the combination would startle them?

- As for the laser, what about using pattern lens? Something so there's a bunch of dots, lines, etc in a large area coming at them quickly?

- I'm assuming you're working with a small team? Have you considered flying a few/bunch of small drones at them?

btw, this is hilarious. My dog won't eat it but she certainly makes sure to get a good long whiff.

You mentioned starlings. IRC, they (European starlings) are invasive species [of course it's more complicated], and as such they should not be released back (that I take from fishing regulations). Are there any special regulations for these kind of birds compared to native like Canada geese?

Starlings are not protected by law in the US. Some farmers and companies use poison to control them but only because they will eat the livestock food. I think it's called Starlicide.

I'm not sure if I lost the dot because of the goggles, daylight, or just because the dot is so small. Anyways buying the laser for my needs was a total bust.

WHAT!!! No fucking way!!! You are making that up!!! Or you have a broken laser. Why would you be wearing goggles when using it outside in daytime? You can't loose the dot at 100 feet, maybe you could if wearing goggles, that should scare geese away at one mile away.

well I guess all the warnings for these laser scare the crap out of me. The goggles take a lot of the light away so that might be it.

I was also leary that someone might step out of their house and look at this thing.

I would never point it at a window or a person just too much respect for this thing.

I'm curious what you bought, some lasers being sold on the net in China will claim one watt, hell 10 watts+ and be 100mw

Ok so I just went out again and tried the laser without the safety glasses. Yes I can see the green dot very easily and can sharpen the focus. Its amazing how much the glasses take away from the laser light. This thing is bright no joke I didn't like bringing the dot any closer than say 50 feet in the grass.

I guess I will try this again when the geese come back tomorrow morning without the glasses.

Reading the safety threads about eye damage r/t lasers >5mw basically scared the crap out of me.

The laser was purchased from Doug Johnson seems like a well made laser.

2nd hand purchase? I don't know Doug, just Rick Trent who makes them which look a lot like this one. I'd be interested in it, but can't buy until you reach 20 posts, you are getting there. Normally, the admins will ban someone listing something outside of the buy-sell section with less than 20 posts to boot. Best list it there when ready to sell and retract the offer in this thread to sell right now. I can't buy it from you this way or discuss pricing further until it is listed in that section first. That would be keeping it classy.

So today I tried it again on the geese since now I could see the laser point. The geese where about 100 yards away on the top of two houses.

Two geese on each house making a ton of noise. So I shine the laser at the first two and one takes off immediately the other just sits there but stops making any noise. The exact same thing happened with the other two on the other roof.

I never hit them directly with the beam and only shined the light for a little bit. I would say its ok for scaring them. At least they stopped making noise and finally flew away. I will need to do some tests when they are on the grass.

I did this in bright sunlight and could see the beam past the houses on the trees. Again I'm amazed at how much of the beam is removed with the safety glasses on.
