eh... i doubt if they'd even bother trying... even if ur joking... not everyone wants to make a laser... just that everyone wants 1...lol

i've read on here that u don't have to cut off the connection like this dude did on the board.. but just solder the + n - with 2 wires to where the lil bulb is/where the diode will be connected to....

Like jake said, that is THE dude when it comes to Dorcy Jr's, Kenom created the first easy to follow tutorial on how to build a DVD-red laser into a Dorcy 1Watt flashlight, hence the birth of the Dorcy Jr , and now this video is updated, even nicer. I would follow Kenom's threads and videos carefully, everything you need is in there.
You can actually get away without severing the connections on the pad, but you need to trace them out to make sure you know where they go, that is why it is easier to just cut them, if it is your first-time. I sever the positive connection on the board, and then install my resistor-pack across the isolated pads. You will almost certinly need some resistors in series of some kind, unless you plan to run an open-can-DVD diode.

ok... is there any way to make the laser stronger if i made it that way? in the video he got about 140mw

140mW is about max you want to use if you are using a 16x DVD-diode, like from Senkat. The Dorcy-driver with no resistors and a 3v battery will supply about 350mA with an intial “spike” up to 400mA, this will kill a 16x. An “open-can-DVD diode could handle this current for a long-time, it would put out more like 200mW, you should still use at least a 1-ohm resistor.
To produce more current you can use a 3.7v battery, but make sure you use the proper resistor-pack to limit the current to a safe level for the diode you are using, this combo will go over 500mA, few diodes can take that for very long.

think ill stick with 140mw...lol..... what is the resistor pack?is it the lil 6ohm thing that he soldered to the diode in the video?

That is a good idea for your first build. The resistor-pack is what Kenom used to limit the current going to the diode, in his case 6-ohms. You can place it anywhere in the circuit, (in series), but the positive-side of the diode is best. I "surface-mount" my resistors to the power-distribution board, same thing, just a different location.

hmm... so i would take out the bulb... and solder the diode to the same spot... and cut the board for whatever it does. should i use that glue stuff like in the video or can i just use a hot glue gun?... still waiting for the dvd burners... might be a week er 2.... i should be able to get my dorcy jr., the lil 6ohm resistor, the module with the batteries, and i can't think of anything else i would need. is there?
 
i went to radio shack tday... n i got a soldering iron... cost me $25... i looked at the resistors... n the only one close to the 6ohm i needed was 5.4ohm.... think that'll be close enuf?

The answer is "probably yes". It really depends on your particular circuit, you should test your mA going to a test-load or your diode to tell for sure.

when i get the dvd burners... ill take out the diodes... think i could use the motors in em to use for a laser spirograph? is there anything other then those 2 thing in the dvd burner that i can use for anything?

that is impressive that radioshack had 5.4ohm resistors. the few radioshacks I've been to don't have anything close to that low, except in their "assortment pack" for $12.. there's a couple 1 ohm and 2.2 ohm which I need more of!

I've found www.newark.com is pretty good for buying resistors as well. At least for me as I buy in large bulk... wouldn't be good if you only want 1.

edit: I just listened to my own advice and ordered 25 1 ohm and 25 2 ohm resistors from newark. came out to be about $1 per resistor which is usual for low ohm resistors. :) i'm now ready to build higher power lasers!!

Yes you could use the motors. an easier approach is to use CPU fans and just super glue a mirror (or cut out a CD as they are very reflective as well) onto the middle of one of those. I'm going to try my hand at making a spirograph today. should be fun :)

and there's some mirrors.. dirchros used to combine beams (maybe), and some strange magnets in there. sometimes the whole metal sled can be melted down to use as a heat sink, or can be burned like a firework if you ever burn a PHR803T blu ray sled. there's a cool video in the multimedia section of this.

now im thinkin about just getting the modules from DX n putting the dvd diodes into it... then get a flashlight big enuf to fir it into... how many Vs can the board take in the DX module?....

i made a laser spirograph a while ago... i used 2 motors with pieces of a cd... just 2 motors... couple of wires... 2 D batteries.... with 2 switches n ta da... o... and ALOT of hot glue... the other day i decided to add another motor to it... n now if ican get the mix right i can make 5 circles around a star... i dont have any potentiometers to adjust the speed... but i took apart a old r/c remote... from my old "micro mosquito" helicopter... n it has 3 potentiometers in it.... perfect but my dad wont lat me take any parts from it... even tho i have 2 controllers...... mabe one day it'll "break"...lol.... just way too tempted....... and the last couple days ive been practicing soldering... so i can solder instead of making another "glue gun masterpiece"...lol
