A while ago i bought a m140 2w laser with a x-drive and a g-2 glass lens installed from DTR. but recently i have noticed that the mw output varies from time to time. sometimes it can burn trough wood and sometimes it can barely cut plastic. its not the batteries that is the problem. Any thoughts what it could be?

You are certain this happens even with fully charged batteries? My M140 drops in power after only a few minutes of use and wont burn but then when I put in fully charged batteries its back to normal, but I am using some cheap 16340's in mine. What host are you using? Are you observing a proper duty cycle? Mine overheats very quickly, don't be letting it overheat too much or it will soon kill the diode. Over heating causes the power to drop the hotter it gets.

i use two AA/R6 type 3.6volt lithium batteries. weird thing about them is that every time i put them in the charged it says they are already fully charged.

Yeah, I lost a laser diode in one of these. I was very careful to not let it stay on longer than 40 seconds even though it was in a Sky Ray host. The LD finally bit the big one and I had to replace it. Just food for thought.

That aluminum mount is intended for lower powered modules however I would think having a fan blowing on it should make the difference. Be sure it doesn't feel very warm to the touch.

I can't think of any other reason for the power drop unless there is something wrong with the driver, the x-drive can also overheat, especially if set at 1.8A or more.

Are the batteries in series or parallel? Just making sure as sometimes people say they are under powered and find they are only using a single Li-ion or two in parallel. Do you have another 6-9V 2A+ power source to check it with? Maybe the cells are struggling with the current draw or they are sagging heavily under load. If you don't have anything else to try it with you can shoot it over and I can test it out.

Oh did not see you are using 14500's. With batteries that size it will be important to have a quality cell. The AW 14500 IMR cell which has the highest discharge rate for a 14500 cell I know of is only rated for 4A. A lot of standard 14500's like xxxxfires will struggle to deliver 1A. Do you have a link to the exact cell you are using?

Specifications:
AW IMR 14500 LiMN Rechargeable Lithium Battery

Nominal Voltage : 3.7V
Capacity : 600mAH
Lowest Discharge Voltage : 2.50V
Standard Charge : CC/CV ( max. charging rate 1.5A )
Cycle Life : > 500 cycles
Max. continuous discharge rate : 4A

I would grab two of these for it.
You can grab them here direct.

Or find them on ebay and some other sites.
