That looks like a WWII era tank periscope. If so, yeah it'd be pretty old.
Solid, too, I'm bettin'. Just looking at that thing I get a PITA, I can't imagine tryin' to take it apart!

I did not see the pic

but was also thinking periscope on a sub or tank ---what else could it possibly be??

bakelite lasts 'forever'
switches made from it 70 years ago still work fine but are hard to find-- and not cheep either

Plastic is effected by sunlight etc and do not last long if used a lot--

Because of this , when I found DPDT with center off AND made from bakelite I bought a 100-- these make the best spiro and for each motor you use one less simple off/on switch and no fear of ever failing--there is no 'off' in DPDTs unless noted- this means each motor is working CCW or CW but never off--- with mine there is an off--

NEED SOME?? PM me

Wow David, at first glance you really looked like Bill Nye to me
Nice grab, those are some pretty cool pieces of optical history ;)

Soaked in lacquer thinner to try and remove Bakelite ,melted. So nasty. You can then scrape it. Do it quickly as it rehardens.,Spent day scrapping it off my hands. Not two prisms.
