Halo Style 2 stage COILGUN

Yes. So, the EMF goes blocked by the diodes..
Oh no, the coil isn't always connected to the caps. Forget it.

Thank you, that is exactly what I'm thinking I should do. I'll try the 6 layers for now to add a safety margin and then with the back EMF protected with diodes I'll attempt 5 layers again. ;-)

Protecting from back EMF...in German the Freilaufdioden :)
I installed some...antiparallel to the coil...no idea what would happen without them. Dont wanna know I guess ^^

Okay I've got the feed system designed (I think), so semi-auto action shouldn't be too hard. For this design I've decided to go with photoflash caps, as there's not enough room for the 350V 200uF ones, unless they're mounted externally which would ruin the design, in my opinion. This is good in that I'll have less to worry about power wise, and millirad has done some of the troubleshooting towards the max power per stage.

If you wanna make a single-stage, you have other problems to solve, than milli had.
If its semi-auto, you need an injector-stage...

I was going to shoot for (haha, I make pun, I funny) a two stage for now, it simplifies things. My design should work fine (in theory, but we know how that goes) as far as semi-auto feed goes. I was reading something and the guy's semi-auto setup just dropped the rounds into the area just behind the coil, and he said the design worked well enough that his placement could be +/-5mm and it wouldn't really effect efficiency that badly, and I'm hoping to get something along the lines of that. If it doesn't work I can always do what he did and put the magazine on top and have them just fall in.

Maybe you should post your design...guess I am capable of telling you wether its a good idea or not ;-)
I have made some semi-autos already...real pistol-ammo-clips...works fine.

The dots on the side of the angled bit are just there to hold the magazine in, they'd be ball bearings with an opening they fit into in the side of the magazine so it didn't fall out, yet would still be removable...or I could make a removable bottom cover...I'll just worry about this when I'm building it. The arrow indicates direction of feed. The flat area is to prevent them from sliding in at a weird angle.

Edit: Resizing, it's a tad larger than I thought.

Edit2: Please pardon the terrible MS Pain remodel. I had fix something and redoing it on the actual drawing at 5:30am would have been a slight inconvenience, but I'll fix it on the drawing a bit later when I finish with the aesthetic design bit.

To flow with the design I've got in my head and partially on paper, is the only reason really. I could go with a vertical feed. I had originally had it just straight up and down, but I realized the rounds wouldn't work right, they'd have been sliding it at a weird angle, possibly getting stuck.

Thats the problem: It will jam more easily.

Sometimes function comes first ;-) I had to accept that fact as well. You need to find the balance...

This is true, sadly. If I were to use an injector system for semi-auto, what kind of injector would you suggest?

I will use a mechanism to push the slug out of the amm-clip just a lil bit, right into the first coil...then the push-button switch will be pushed...and FOOOOSH.

Ahh, that is a very good idea...already got a design in mind (better than the last one, :D).

I like to keep things easy, replicatable and reliable...same with the contacts. Why waste time and money on parts for IR gates or detectors in general? Switched trigger without delay and ost nothing.

@AnselmoFanZero
WHY WASTE TIME ON >>IR<<? Because we are laser fanatics, and at least, we'll use a 5mW IR laser for triggering the coils :D
nah as Proto said, I make pun, I funny. :P

I don't remember anything about a switched trigger or how it works.. can you explain me? ;)
