Sound pickup on mine is really good compared to other projectors. The LK group buy, minus Tmack's, they all have to have speakers cranked to the max and within inches of the back of the projector. Mine I used my cell phone to test and I was able to get 6 feet from the back before it stopped picking up the music. As long as your mom is able to put a speaker within a few feet of the unit it should have no problem picking it up. Auto works just as well but it has a set time before patterns change and move, sound just moves with the bass so its more synchronized

I believe sound is second to last dip switch.
