Hey everyone!

I recently got invited to be a Google Glass Explorer! However, I need to raise some serious cash to actually be able to receive my glasses. I was hoping that whoever is willing, could help me out! I truly want to take advantage of this opportunity and would appreciate any donations! I started an indiegogo campaign to try and raise funds. I would truly appreciate any donation!

If I do end up receiving my goal amount, I would be more than happy to share anything I am allowed to share with you guys, if you have any questions regarding Google Glass.

Thank you so much!
Matt

I also got the invite, but it isn't going to happen, heh. Besides, it isn't worth it for that much money to me even if I had it, it is far too limited in capabilities.

Btw, they request you fly out to their store in cali or NY to pick it up last I checked; they won't ship it to you. So, tack on air-faire and boarding/meals with the expense.

I feel as though if I have the opportunity, why not take it? I know it's not at its prime, but the device itself is incredible.

Actually, they are offering to ship it to you now.

Thank you!

I also got the offer.... not spending that much money for something that hasn't received a lot of good praise

I understand.
However, I would appreciate any help, even a dollar!

Thank you!

I'm in the same boat... Got three invites but couldn't afford it!

Gosh... I want to use Glass so badly! I will probably get it when it comes out to consumers as long as it's around $600. Then my life will be complete :p :D

I don't get it, what's this "invite" thing when it apparently costs just as much to just buy the damn thing anyway?

Besides, why would you apply if you can't afford it?

That's the thing: you can't just flat out buy it. You have to be invited to buy it by google.

-It's $1500, requires a smart phone WITH mobile hotspot (additional monthly fee) to pair with / piggy back off of any time you aren't in a dedicated wifi location to operate. It can connect via Bluetooth to your smartphone to act as a hands free HID/HUD but without wifi connection the functions are severely limited (it cannot display video info of your cellphone screen at any point).
-It can only record a handful of photos or 10sec of video when not connected to wifi.
-There is a huge latency issue when attempting to use google hangout (google's version of face time) on the order of 1000-5000mS on average. Also the video transmission quality is poor and the audio is even worse due to an omnidirection microphone.
-Aside from giving you GPS directions the only things it can do is record video/photos, search google, and give you notifications from certain social media websites (currently doesn't support facebook). That's it.
-Average battery life is about five hours between charges.

There are no plans for increased onboard storage or disconnected from internet operability. There are no plans to include a cell radio to access cellular data networks.

Many of us who signed up to be invited years ago when it was announced thought it would be the headset version of an iPhone at least, and at best, the headset version of a small computer. Instead it is a $1500 headset that requires a smartphone to access most features and doesn't add any functionality other than a hands free display. Many of us applied before they even announced the $1500 price tag because they said it was a "Beta Test" and we assumed if you got in, you got one on loan from Google.

Alright, I didn't come here to be lectured on why I should not take advantage of the opportunity presented to me. I understand that you guys have your own opinion, and that's completely fine, but I'm here because I thought that I could be lent a hand by the community that I have been a part of for many years. If you guys don't want to help out, that's fine...just say so, but don't criticize me for the decision that I have made.

Thank you.

I did not mean to criticize your choice to get one. I merely stated the available information on the product for all to see, especially because other posters were inquiring about it.

Yes you've been a part of the community here a long time (My first account [info forgotten] was made in '07), so you should know then that open discussion of something you're asking people to donate for cannot and will not be shunned just because it sheds an unfavorable light on your request for donations.

I'm sure that your opinions wont affect your choice of donating, I just feel as though the point was to try and receive support. Instead, I was being questioned for deciding to accept the invite. I'm not saying you guys were patronizing me, I just need to raise money, and discussing why others don't like it isn't necessarily helping me.

Also have an invite, but $1500 is a lot to fork over. Sigurthr went through the common issues already.

The one he didn't touch on, and that is a deal breaker for me (as it will be for many people) is that there is no version yet, that is made to work with your own set of prescription glasses.

IIRC you can now buy a set of designer frames, with glass built onto them, but that's not an easy to go with option if you're picky about your glasses, and will add a few hundred on top.

Just a heads up in case you wear glasses.

I do wear glasses, but I also wear contact lenses, so I don't mind switching between the two to use Glass :)

I continue to save for Google Glass. If I'm a long way off (with only $100 or $200 raised) I'll just refund it all back. If I can reach $800, I'll continue saving and try to raise more money while using a lot of my own.
