Thats such a good idea now I can save the crapy 5mw diodes in the modules i get ;D.

What current did you use? Did you measure the power? I would be very happy if these diodes could provide 150-170mW of power after acrylics reliably.[/quote]

I have not yet measured it, although I have compared it to my other blu-ray's and I've been through several 803T's being pushed up to 140mW and this one is defiantly a bit more powerful. My multi-meter indicated 140mA. It burns very well, at far distances even, like up to 10' probably further without even focusing it. It does get a little warm, but we'll see the reliability!

I spent the past 4 hours designing and building my "dual-laze"/

a 6x and an open can all in one plastic square, powered by one 9v and 2 AMC7135's.

It all worked out well and was done, it was marvelous. I then put the top on and screwed it all in, only to find that by doing so I had shorted out the red diode and it went POOF. THen as I was opening it to fix, My blu-ray stopped working... I suspect wire came loose (the one that connects to the diode).

so It worked for like 5 minutes, and now is dysfunctional. I am pooped...

Don't laugh too hard Dave, those 5mW reds can be useful: they made great eyes for my Halloween goblin! ...with some packing bubble wrap to disperse the beams a bit of course, for safety. Hey! just thought of something else: how about using them in pointers, when you get tired of all that violet-colored stuff?

re: driver current setting: I test the drivers I build at the input voltage they'll be working at - and at different loads, including a dead short. Wouldn't a decent current-regulating driver put out the same current, regardless of the load? Presuming of course there is enough voltage behind it.

And output current should also be independent of the input voltage, within a working range (obviously it couldn't for example push an amp through a 100-ohm load with only 5 volts input). This can be accomplished by having the circuit generate a reference voltage that is independent of applied voltage - like the forward voltage of a diode, or a low-V zener.

But this thread isn't about driver design [sub]:-?[/sub]

I have "lecture pointers" (less than 10mW) in 660nm, 635nm, 593nm, 543nm, 473nm, & 405nm  :P

I'm going to guess that is a HeNe handheld, I wonder if there is a noticeable difference between that and 532nm. Edit: Oops I guess it was just a typo.

Back On Topic, today when I was messing around with the long closed can in this sled in my garage, I was greeted by this thing:

(The pic makes it look bigger than it really was, it was only 6"-9")

I'm pretty sure it was harmless because it didn't bite me when I picked it up. ;D Neat little thing, it was fun to mess around with while I waited for my soldering iron heat up. Then I put him back outside so none of my pets would eat it.

Oh, and the LCC is a nice diode, I have mine running at 400mA.

The difference is like the 660nm vs. 635nm difference. When you see them alone, you're not really sure. However, when they are shined next to each other the difference is clear. I think that 543nm is more "pleasant" to look at.

It is certainly more "cool." 8-)

Yea so I confirmed my 6x in the "Dual Laze" is OK. (thank god te DX AMC7135 regulator circuits have no capacitors). The read diode is toast. it was my last open can!!!

I do not want to put in one for the 20 IR diodes I have, because then I wont get to take kewl beam shots of both laz0rs on at once...

sigh, it was preety shmexy while it lasted, now I need to wait for another 6x sled so I can harvest the long can red!!!
